Contemporary Abstract Neutral Square Oil Paintings of Movement and Color

2017

About the Item

These remarkable 16 x 16" square works by Robert McAn are contemporary abstract neutral square oil paintings of movement and color. $3800.00 each. The top work is Lima #7, 2017, mixed media on canvas, and the bottom piece is Lismore #48, 2017, mixed media on canvas. These are the perfect works to add to an empty accent wall, where you need a neutral simplicity and calming element! McAn received a Bachelor of Arts degree from North Texas State University in 1982, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas in 1991. McAn is currently Head of Membership and Special Events at the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth (since 1994). From shredding of personal documents to create a pulp medium for canvas, or more recently a personal concern that our natural landscapes have been modified by consumer product containers, whereupon the artist tried to recycle the landscape from its destroyed source, McAn has used personal experience as a launching off point for his work. As explained by McAn “Recently I have been examining my own behavior while I move through my day to day life, especially where I am looking when not engrossed in a task. One facet of that examination focuses on travel, which is a significant part of my work life. In past times, I would take lots of pretty pictures of the places I experienced. But over the years, that has transitioned. I am now most interested in the passing glances. And I have found that much of my experiences are influenced by a system of actions. They are these passing glances while Looking Up, Looking Down, or Looking Through. My mixed media paintings try to replicate that experience.”

Blue Statue, 2020 "For Blackburn, the Western’s heroic drama, good-versus-evil narrative, and assertive landscape are challenges to face in her work. These aspects of film can overwhelm a painting, thus distancing the viewer from the art. She wants the art to be dominant; “Painting wins,” she declares. She finds this happens when a painting possesses what she terms “classical balance.” By this the artist means that everything is where it needs to be compositionally—nothing can be changed—and “the whole can be seen at once.” Linda Blackburn...

  • Untitled 0042, Original painting, Atmospheric Art, Industrial North, Romanticism
    Located in Deddington, GB
Inspiration for my work comes from internalised imagery absorbed throughout her childhood in Northumberland and the North East of England. Images of declining industry, the closing of coal mines, abandoned shipyards and other associated heavy industries loomed large across the landscape. The atmosphere of loss, sadness was as palpable as the smell of smoke, tar and coke from the power stations. Philippas work consists of remembered imagery of past landscapes combined with the pastoral landscape in which she lives. The muted palette references the industrial while suggested imagery reflects the rural. Work produced references both worlds combining two genres, marrying post contemporary modernism with elements of classical romanticism. Two genres, two generations of artistic movements intersect with each other, creating a place where contradictions co exist. Disjunctive kinds of everything, hidden in plain sight, create a realm in which one can lose oneself. Implied abstract imagery reveals conflict between beauty and desolation ,whilst Romanticism and Modernism combine with clashing qualities of drawing and painting. Images develop through a series of intuitive acts. Repeated applications of thin films of ink and paint build depth and patina. Layers are often removed by washing and scrubbing, revealing a palimpsest of faded marks and former painterly decisions, exposing the underbelly, vulnerable and tender. Through Philippas current and ongoing line of enquiry several connections are being explored which are both real and notional. The fusing of genres, the industrial and the pastoral which combine elements of classical romanticism and post contemporary modernism, these relate to her past and her present surroundings. Rarely associated elements of drawing and painting are combined on canvas adding to the narrative of her personal story. Work produced displays...
