""My drawing includes visual swatches/my painted copy, of parts of the 1787 painting by Jacques-Louis David, 'The Lictors Bring to Brutus the Bodies of His Sons'. My aim is to represent parts of images made in the past in my own contemporary work. The meaning of the original painting by David is not what my 'assemblage' of visual notes is about. My drawing is about the fact that elements of visual structure (realism and abstraction, realistic drawing and pure paint can co-exist).""
About the Artist:
Sian Oblak is an abstract painter living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Oblak's paintings involve examining the visual (spatial) and conceptual construction of the field of painting itself. The way paint has been applied - flat through volume, using symbolism, abstraction, realism….. - every ‘way’ of creating a painting seems viable. This idea is the reason why her paintings contain snatches of pure paint, non referential shapes, alongside rendered forms and shapes from historical paintings. Ms. Oblak makes many different sized paintings that range from large (5 ft x 8 ft) down to very small works 3"" x 5"". The paintings focus on very smooth surfaces and subtle colors in often unnamable hues. Groups of the small paintings hang in her studio representing 'visual conversations', between color, form and content."
