"Jazz Musicians" by Terence Coyle (b. 1925-2020) Oil on Canvas Frame: 25.25 X 37.25 Image: 24 X 36 This early piece is done in an Figurative Abstract Expressionism style. Terence Coyle (American, 1925-2020) is an American Realist. Born in Williamstown, MA, Coyle was raised in Vermont and in the Berkshires, and was also raised in Vermont where he became an avid skier. His parents were Ted and Leona Eichelser Coyle. They felt impelled to send their rebellious teen-ager to live with his Aunt Marie Eichelser who was secretary to Dr. Abraham Flexner, director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies in Princeton, NJ. There he met Albert Einstein and other science luminaries. After he graduated from Princeton High School, because of World War II, he joined the US Army Air Force in 1944. In 1945, he flew one mission in a B24 Liberator Bomber as tail gunner over Salzbutg, Austria, targeting the rail yards. He told of when he was in the sky, he saw hundreds of black dots over them. They were the RAF planes on their way to bomb Berchtesgaden, Hitler's hideout. He eventually relocated to New York City to pursue a career as an artist. Coyle attended Columbia University and the Art Students League of NY. It was at the League that he committed to paint for the rest of his life. His studios included one at Carnegie Hall for many years, and later, a studio on Union Square. He also worked in his studio near his country home in Great Barrington, MA. His countryside landscapes were mostly plein-air paintings. Coyle has been an instructor of painting and figure drawing at the Art Students League since 1974. For 19 years, he also taught figure drawing at the National Academy of Design. Mr. Coyle has been an instructor of painting and figure drawing at the Art Students League since 1974 and has also taught at the National Academy of Art and Design. He collaborated with the late Robert Beverly Hale on three books on anatomy and figure drawing: Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters (Watson-Guptill); Master Class in Figure Drawing (Watson-Guptill); and Albinus on Anatomy (Dover). He also wrote, Terence Coyle, A Retrospective at 80 (Jo-An Books). Videos include The Painter’s Mind (reviewed as an “Outstanding Video,” Susan C. Awe, Library Journal). In the summer of 2006, Coyle was invited by the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, MA, to participate in a spring-to-fall exhibition of the museum’s large collection of the Hudson River School painters. His en plein air landscape painting Monument Mountain Over Fountain Pond, which was selected for the exhibition entitled Power of Place, is part of his series on this subject. In December 2005, his solo show Terence Coyle, A Retrospective, at 80, was exhibited at the Grand Galleries of the National Arts Club with selected oils, watercolors, and graphics, dating from 1955 to 2005. Included in the exhibition were his important series of paintings and graphics of the demolition of the old Helen Hayes Theater that was first exhibited at Fordham University at Lincoln Center in 1986. Between 1982 and 1984, Coyle became deeply involved with the rallies and protests of the theatrical community in their efforts to save the Helen Hayes and three other intimate Broadway theaters that once housed dramatic plays. His day-to-day absorption in these events evolved into this important collection. A master of oil painting, watercolor and printmaker, he loved painting his environs and the people within. He was in a show New Acquisitions Art Students League of New York with Bruce Dorfman, Chitra Ganesh, Robert S. Shore, Terence Coyle and a show at UB Art Galleries On the Front Lines organized by Jillian Russo, curator of the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery at The Art Students League of New York. Veterans who ended up at the ASL, many Abstract Expressionist artists who studied with Morris Kantor and Yasuo Kuniyoshi, who influenced the development of their individual styles. Al Held, Alfred Leslie, Donald Judd, Everett Raymond Kinstler, John Hultberg, Knox Martin, Michael Goldberg, Morris Kantor, Paul Jenkins, Robert Rauschenberg, Stanley Boxer, Terence Coyle and William Scharf. Terence Coyle’s painting After the Blizzard of 1996 was sold at Sotheby’s, New York, in The New York Sale in April of 2015. His paintings are in many notable public and private collections, museums, and galleries throughout the country, including the Butler Institute of American Art, Museum of the City of New York, the New York State Museum in Albany and the National Academy of Design, Fordham University, the Museum of Performing Arts, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, the Berkshire Museum, and the Billy Rose Theatre Collection at Lincoln Center.
