Tim Rollins and K.O.S.I see the promised land (after the Rev. Dr. M. L. King, Jr.)2008
2008
$85,000

About
This particular work references Dr. King's 1968 speech, which was the last speech he delivered before his assassination. In this speech, King famously said, "I've been to the mountaintop." The solid black triangle superimposed over Dr. King's words convey a mountain's peak and are also an abstract symbol of the power and intensity of his words.
Tim Rollins, a renowned educator who passed away in December 2017, had been an active member in the South Bronx education community since teaching at a public middle school in the early 1980s. In 1984, Rollins launched the Art and Knowledge Workshop in the South Bronx with a group of at-risk students who called themselves K.O.S. (Kids of Survival). Many of the original K.O.S. members are still actively involved in the collective today.
Rollins and K.O.S. began their works with important literary and musical classics as the inspiration for their artwork, which is typically produced directly on the pages of books, cut out and laid in a grid on canvas. This is their signature style, which was developed early on in their collaboration. They have used numerous text works as source materials including literary classics by William Shakespeare, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Franz Kafka, Mark Twain and F. Scott Fitzgerald, as well as musical compositions by Felix Mendelssohn, Richard Strauss and Duke Ellington.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire historical works from the collective that are seldom seen outside of the many museums who have Tim Rollins and K.O.S. in their permanent collections - MoMA, LACMA, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, and the Tate, to name a few.
