About the Item

Since 2008, Tina Bluefield has been drawn to the world of large-scale abstraction, exploring the relationship between color, form, and the natural landscapes that inspire her. She grew up just 40 miles north of New York City, where her fascination with art began early—first through children’s book illustrations, then through encouragement from her family and her uncle, Fred Maine, an illustrator with a studio in the Empire State Building. A visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened her eyes to what painting could be, and throughout high school, she was mentored by artist and teacher Herold Witherspoon, an experience that deepened her love for the craft. With New York’s museums just a train ride away, she often spent time studying masterworks up close, shaping her artistic perspective. After high school, she traveled extensively, gaining new perspectives from different cultures and landscapes. She spent 30 years in Colorado, painting local scenery and creating large-scale watercolors of the New Mexico and Arizona deserts. Her work was shown in galleries in Durango and Santa Fe, and she earned her BFA in painting (Phi Beta Kappa) from CU Boulder, studying with color-field artist Gene Matthews and attending George Woodman’s thought-provoking art theory seminars. In 2006, she moved to Joshua Tree, captivated by the desert’s raw beauty. She renovated an old homestead cabin and built a passive solar studio, immersing herself in the landscape’s shifting light and expansive horizons. While she initially focused on desert-inspired works, her practice gradually evolved toward pure abstraction. In 2019, she spent a year in Cape Cod, drawn to the region’s water and changing light. The experience offered a fresh perspective, balancing the openness of the desert with the fluidity of coastal landscapes. Returning to Joshua Tree, she embarked on her most ambitious project yet—designing and building a self-sustaining, off-grid studio and home on five acres of untouched land. Completed in 2022, this space now serves as the heart of her creative process, where she continues to push the boundaries of abstraction while staying connected to the natural world that has always inspired her. Artist Statement: "My paintings evolve in layers. Because each layer must dry before the next is applied, I tend to work on many pieces at once. My aesthetic interests lead me in many directions, so I often find myself exploring multiple series simultaneously. I continue to look at Cy Twombly, Jasper Johns, Agnes Martin, Richard Diebenkorn, Matisse, and many lesser-known painters whose work speaks to me in unexpected ways."
