About the Item
Illustration of a shaggy black and white dog taking a bath
Original cover for The Saturday Evening Post, May 11, 1946
The Post editors described: "Artist Albert Staehle had long been amused by the look of mingled martyrdom and disgust his spaniel, Butch, adopts when submitting to the indignity of a bath. It developed, in the making of the painting on this week's cover, that Staehle never had seen Butch at his expressive best. Ordinarily, the spaniel is bathed in a tub. When he found he had to pose in a dishpan, in the interests of art, Butch was doubly disgusted. Although not fond of bathing, the spaniel does like a bathroom. Staehle has learned to close the bathroom doors tightly before leaving Butch alone in the house. Otherwise the artist comes home to find that Butch has seized one end of a type of paper not generally favored in interior decorating and has run through every room with it, like a kitten with a ball of yarn." (The Saturday Evening Post, May 11, 1946, page 2)
