He was born 22nd November in Paris, where he spent his life.
He mainly painted animal and historical subjects in a loose but realistic style.
He studied under Bonnat, Detaille and later Toudouze. He went on to show his work at the Salon of French Artists. In 1898 he became a member of this society and he obtained an honourable mention the following year. During his artistic career he received 2 medals- in 1904 and 1920 respectively.
In 1908 he was awarded a special grant to go travelling and at the end of his career he was knighted for his services to art.

Anre' Marchand began painting at the age of 14 years, he was from the Provence region of France. He painted landscapes an watercolors, and more modern and semi abstract styles from his influence by Matisse. His paintings can be viewed in several museums including Paris.

He was a figure and animal painter who was based originally in Bradford, where he lived until 1885, when he moved to Edwinstowe, near Mansfield, Nottingham. In 1901 he moved to Hampstead and then back north to Harrogate where he stayed until his death. In his later years he became a picture dealer, but in his will he referred to himself as ‘animal painter’.
