About the Item

'Portrait of a Bird in Snow', oil on board, by Anna Costa (circa 1960s). This is a unique still-life painted by the artist in warm colours in an Impressionist style. In ancient cultures such as Greece, a dead bird was seen as a sign of good luck and fresh start. The ancient Greeks felt that birds play an important role in our daily lives. In Christian art, a dead bird is often shown as the symbolism of the Holy Spirit. In old Master paintings, dead animals served as reminders that life is short. For this artwork, Costa uses an impasto technique that enhances both visual and textural features. The colours in Costa's artworks are famous for their richness and vibrancy, and the quality of light in the region plays a big part in this. The artist has depicted this dead bird as part of the landscape of her region. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. It is in good overall condition and is newly framed. Upon request a video will be provided. The stamp of the artist's atelier appears on the reverse side of the work which is now covered by the frame backing. About the Artist: Anna Costa (approx: 1922-2022) painted in her Provençal village in the Cavaillon area from the 1940s until the 1970s. Upon her passing, her estate released her art into the market where dealers around the world are clambering for her works. Costa's art is characterised by its bright colours and strong naive style which make them instantly recognisable. This style is called Provençal Colourism. It is a regional art movement that emerged in the South of France in the early 20th century. It is also characterised by bright and bold colours, as well as strong contracts between light and shadow. The movement drew inspiration from the natural beauty of the region including its landscapes, people and traditions. Woman in Snow - Post Impressionist Oil, Figure in Landscape by Victor Charreton
By Victor Charreton

The work depicts a woman walking through a snowy village in winter. The piece is beautifully coloured. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 33"x38" Unframed: 24"x29" Provenance: Private collection - Portugal Ader - Paris Charreton was a landscape artist in the Lyons tradition with a love of sensual impasto. In his works he seeks to capture fleeting, momentary effects, like those achieved by the Impressionists: effects at different times of day and in different seasons, such as dusk and snow. As a young man he painted the environs of Bourgoin. Skilled in capturing minute changes in the weather, he was also adept at capturing the spirit of new places. Beside his native Dauphiné and his adopted Auvergne, he was also charmed by the landscapes of the Île-de-France and Paris - Montmartre, the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Parc Montsouris...
