About

Arthur Alfred Davis British, (b. 1859 fl. 1877-1905) Over the Fence Oil on canvas, signed & dated ‘91 Image size: 33.5 inches x 27.5 inches Size including frame: 49 inches x 41 inches Arthur Alfred Davis was born on 31 August 1859 in Colchester, Essex. His parents were Frederick Davis, a landscape artist from Dover (b.1823 fl.1853-1892) and Sarah Davis. By 1871, the family had moved to the St Pancras area of London where his father earned his living as an artist. Although little is known of his early education, it is highly likely he would have been taught art by his father. He married to Eleanor Helen Holt in 1878 and together they lived at Weedington Road, St Pancras. They later moved to Enkel Street, Islington before settling in Watford around the turn of the century. He exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1881-1884 and at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street with titles including ‘Dust Cart – a London Street’, and ‘Waiting for a Job’. Davis specialised in hunting and sporting scenes with dogs which were highly popular during the Victorian era. He was influenced by his contemporaries such as Thomas Blinks and George Derville Rowlandson. Davis’s works are painted in loose free flowing style that captures the animation and movement of the dogs beautifully. Presentation: The painting is housed in its original period gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.
