French painter 19th century
Born 22 july 1838 in Le Havre. Died 1st January 1908 in Paris

He studied under Eugène Fromentin (1820-1876) and Philippe Rousseau (1816-1887) and made his début at the Paris Salon in 1861. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1861 to 1908. He also exhibited in Munich in 1879 and Vienna in 1894. He was awarded a first class medal in 1873, a second class medal in 1879, and a silver medal in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle. He was made a member of the Legion d’honneur in 1897. Herrmann Léon started off painting still-lifes and landscapes, then became specialised in Hunting scenes and particularly hunting with dogs.
