A delightful portrait of a Pekingese dog by Florence Mabel Hollams. The dog is most likely a red sable Pekingese and is depicted sat on a dark brown pouffe looking out towards the viewer. Originally bred in China as lapdogs for the Imperial family, Pekingese were considered to be symbols of royalty and good luck. They became popular in Britain during the late 19th century and early 20th century.
Florence Mabel Hollams was a horse portraitist and animal painter born at 24 Westgate Terrace in Kensington, London on 25 December, 1876. She is sometimes referred to as Frances. Her father Frederick William Hollams was a barrister from Blackheath, Kent and her mother Mary Owen Lanyon was born in Antrim, Belfast and was the daughter of Sir Charles Lanyon. By 1881, the family were living at Marloes House, Marloes Road, Kensington but later moved to Southside in Wimbledon Common.
Hollams studied under William Frank Calderon (1865-1943) at his school of animal painting which opened in 1895 and also at the Académie Julian in Paris. By around 1896/1897, she had moved with her parents to Dene Park in Tonbridge, Kent, the home of her paternal Grandfather. She made her debut at the Royal Academy in 1897 listing her address as Dene-Park and was one of the first female Academicians. Her works were highly popular and she included amongst her patrons the Earl of Sefton, Lord Cornwallis and Earl Beatty. She became an Associate of the Society of Women’s Artists in 1899 and was elected to the society in 1902.
On 18 July 1903, she married Charles Lionel Fox,a steward and land agent to the Farlawne Estate owned by the Cazalet family, who were well known racehorse owners and trainers. Together the couple had 2 children and lived at Oak Cottage, Claygate near Shipbourne not far from the Farlawne estate. They later moved to nearby Puttenden Manor where Hollams continued to paint under her maiden name. She died in Taunton on 2 March, 1963.
Hollams also produced some flower and figurative works, however, it is for her portraits of horses and dogs that she is best known. Many of her Paintings are held in public collections including the Leicestershire Museum, 1st the Queen’s Dragoon Guards Heritage Trust and the National Trust.

A delightful painting of a mother duck with her ducklings by constant Ludovic Artz. A white duck can be seen sitting on a river bank surrounded by her five ducklings. Two of the ducklings are shown taking rest by her side as the others forage close by.
Constant David Ludovic Artz was born in Paris on 3 June, 1870, the son of David Adolph Constant Artz (1837-1890) and Josephine Jouanin. His father was a Dutch artist who had moved his family to Paris to set up a studio. The family returned to Holland in 1874 and settled in the Hague. Artz was taught art by his father and at the age of 12 enrolled at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. He also received tuition from Hendrik Mesdag (1831-1915) and Willem Maris (1844-1910) who had an influence on his subject matter.
He married Johanna Sophia Cecilia Ginjoolen at the Hague on 5 July, 1893. One of the witnesses was the artist Tony Offermans (1854-1911) whom he was apprenticed to at his studio. The couple went on to have two children together and to supplement his income, Artz also worked as an art teacher. One of his pupils was Leendert Scheltema (1876-1966).
After divorcing from his first wife in 1915, he married Lucie Sophie van der Hoeven in 1917. At some point he moved to Soestdijk, living there until 1926 when he relocated to Katwijk at Sea in. He returned to Soestdijk in 1931 where he died on 23 February, 1951.
Like his father, Artz was fascinated by nature and after painting a series of landscapes and seascapes began producing scenes featuring ducks and waterfowl usually on or by lakes and rivers. He was an expert at painting the play of light upon water and also preferred to work with smaller canvasses. His work can be found in private and public collections including the Rijksmuseum.
Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

We are grateful to Mr Fred Meijer for his attribution to Ludolf de Jongh
Ludolf de Jongh was the son of a shoemaker. When his father moved to Rotterdam, the young Ludolf decided to learn art rather than shoemaking and became a pupil of Cornelis Saftleven. Later he studied under Anthony Palamedes in Delft and still later with Jan van Bijlert in Utrecht.
In 1635 he travelled to France with Francis Bacon. Seven years later, in 1642, he returned to the Netherlands when he heard that his mother had fallen ill. He set up a shop in Rotterdam, and his earliest signed paintings date from that year.
According to Houbraken, his travels had caused him to speak French so fluently, that his parents had to learn French in order to speak with him.
De Jongh’s work shows a strong influence from the Utrecht school of Caravaggio admirers, especially Jacob Duck...
