About the Item
This stunning Old Master 17th century oil portrait painting is attributed to Francesco Fieravino, an artist famous in his day for still lifes and carpets. This painting which dates to circa 1650 is a stunning depiction of an Italian Greyhound on the right with two other dogs. The dogs are collared and a prized possession along with the Ushak carpet on which they are portrayed. A really beautiful painting with tremendous detail and colouring.
Ushak carpets were woven for the wealthy Ottoman home market but their depictions in paintings by 16th century artists, like Velasquez, Zurbaran and Vermeer, illustrate their wider appeal. By the 17th century there was a substantial market in Europe and they could be found in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese churches as well as large European country houses
Provenance. Cambridgeshire estate.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 26 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in its original ornate carves gilt frame, 33 inches by 27 inches framed and in good condition.
Francesco Noletti, also known as Francesco Fieravino (1611, Valletta? - 4 December 1654, Rome) was an Italian still-life painter. He was often referred to by his nickname, Il Maltese. A native of Malta, he was first recorded working in Rome during the time of Pope Alexander VII; painting still-lifes with Pietro Cesarini, a Knight of Malta, as his patron. Long confused with an artist named Benedetto Fioravanti, who painted similar still-lifes, his works were also often attributed to an otherwise unknown painter named Francesco Fieravino. It was only in this century that the discovery of an anonymous portrait at the University of Malta led to the firm establishment of his identity.
He is mentioned for the first time in the inventories of the Barberini family, between 1631 and 1636, as the creator of "six oil papers with various flowers". As late as 1661, a certain "Francesco Maltese" is mentioned as a specialist in paintings with ornate carpets. In the absence of signed works, two etchings published in 1703 by Jacobus Coelemans served as the basis for establishing his style.
It has been certified that, as of 1642, he had settled permanently in Rome; first on the Via Margutta, then on the Via Laurina, where he worked with Andrea Sacchi and got married. His death certificate from 1654 describes him as a "famous painter".

Giovanni Agostino Cassana (c.1658 – 6 May 1720) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. He was a son of Giovanni Francesco Cassana and an elder brother of Niccolò and Giovanni Battista. He was born at Venice, and was initially instructed by his father. In 1670 he worked at the court of Ferdinando de' Medici in Florence and travelled regularly between the two cities, but spent at least the years 1718–1720 in Genoa, where he later died. He painted portraits with some success, but preferred painting animals in the style of Antonio Maria Vasallo, Benedetto Castiglione, and Joannes Fyt, a style which he learned from Jacques van de Kerckhove...

Young Man with Two Dogs in a Landscape - British Edwardian art oil painting
Located in London, GB
This superb British Edwardian figurative landscape oil painting is by noted animal artist Edwin Noble. Painted in 1904 it is a large and detailed painting of a young man, kneeling in a grassy thicket with his two dogs, a lurcher and terrier. He is restraining the dogs whilst his ferret goes down a rabbit hole in the hedgerow. Two dead rabbits are already lying on the grass beside them. Beyond is a county landscape of fields and trees. The young man in his stripped shirt and waistcoat and the two white dogs really stand out in the mass of greenery around them as do the white wild flowers at their feet. The detail and brushwork are superb. This is an excellent example of Edwin Noble's work as an animal painter in the Edwardian period and also depicts country pursuits.
