1866

About the Item

Frederick Rondel (American 1826-1892) A Large, Rare Painting of "Four Horses", 1866 A magnificent and rare oval painting of horses, oil on board, measuring 52" in diameter, with exceptional quality to detail of the horses and landscape. It is indeed very rare for an American artist to paint horses in this quality and size, thus making this painting an extremely important and rare work of art. Most probably one of his best paintings he ever created. Signed and dated F. Rondel 1866 Frederick Rondel, born in Paris in 1826, came to America and is best remembered as the only art teacher of Winslow Homer. He was also a successful landscape and marine painter who painted extensively throughout New England and as far as San Francisco. Among his paintings were views of the Hudson River. Rondel's New England landscapes and paintings of New York City were ultimately influenced by the romanticism of his teachers in Paris, Theodore Gudin and Auguste Jugelet. It is known that in 1855 to 1857 Rondel was in Boston, having arrived from Europe, and one year later was in South Malden, Massachusetts, while concurrently keeping a New York City studio. Very good condition, recently professionally cleaned, no damages noted. Fantastic quality, ready to hang.
