About the Item

Antique Victorian English 19th Century, three Spaniel dogs in an Interior. George Armfield was a mid-Victorian painter of mostly dog scenes but also painted other animal subjects such as interiors with huntsmen and simple well-painted landscapes. He got his big break when Queen Victoria saw some of his work and commissioned him to paint a piece for her. His work was collected throughout the world and held in many important collections. This piece is in excellent condition and if framed in a wonderful antique frame. The Spaniel paintings by Armfield were possibly his most popular subjects and he painted many outstanding examples such as this one, with the three-color Spaniels being the most sought-after Armfield's. This is a good example of his work and would have been painted during the middle of his career. Later in his life, his work became less sharp and he used a darker palette. This is a perfect painting for almost any room in a home, like a bedroom, study, den, family room, hallway, dining room The complementary colors for this piece are Beige, Brown, Green, Blue, off-white, black, red, gray, and white. This type and quality of painting would have been painted for wealthy British patrons for either their country houses or their grand townhouses in areas in London like Mayfair, Belgravia Chelsea, and Kensington.

By James Cassie
Located in Woodbury, CT
James Cassie was born at Keithhall near Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, the son of a prosperous tea and spirit merchant. Although briefly a pupil of the artist James Giles, Cassie was largely self-taught. He began his career as a painter of animals and portraits, but on moving to Aberdeen he increasingly turned his attention to local seascapes and coastal scenes, especially at dawn and sunset. He favored these outdoor scenes but continued to paint some domestic subjects and portraits throughout his life. In 1869 he moved to Edinburgh and was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy. Shortly before his death in 1879 he was elected an Academician. This piece is framed in its original frame and the painting is signed lower right and inscribed on the reverse. From the inscription on the reverse, this painting was purchased from an important house sale...
