About the Item

This piece depicts a Tiger done with beautiful expressive colors and a distinctive street art design, this piece pops with energy and romantic beauty. Its composition and bold collage make a wonderful statement and have an edgy and elegant composition. This particular piece includes hand-ripped posters from Amsterdam as this is the artist's urban technique. It is signed by the artist lower right and on verso and comes ready to be displayed with hanging wire on verso. Art Measures 40 x 30 inches Gieler was born in 1982 in the Netherlands. In the late 90’s he began experimenting with graffiti in Amsterdam. For years Gieler remained active with spraying letters on walls but as he got older, graffiti evolved into street-art, where he started to experiment on canvas. The street influences can be recognized strongly in his works, by using a very interesting and distinctive technique where he hand-tears posters from the city and reworks them into his canvases. He is able to compose unique images on canvas captivating the viewer with the voice of the people and his own. Blending urban elements in a highly intricate way, he creates beautiful compositions that differentiate him from his counterparts. Since 2014 he has been diligently creating this body of work by replicating the captivating beauty of pop icons with his own style. As an emerging artist from The Netherlands, his collage works are always being provided with posters he collects from walls out of the streets; he has developed a technique of ”Sustainable art" which gives a living and edgy character to his paintings. He also uses other old materials, like damaged brushes, blunt stanleyknives or other older and sometimes broken tools. Since by working with these tools and materials the result is always more surprising and exciting. Gieler is able to create a completely unusual and powerful body of work by using rebellious and nostalgic plays on icons of the past and present such as Brigitte Bardot, Kate Moss, Elvis Presley, and Marilyn Monroe. Working on mostly larger canvases, the presence of these pop pieces make a dramatic statement; but once looking closer at the details, the viewer is able to discover exciting, rich textures by the many layers of selected hand pulled posters. Gieler's evolving fascination with the voice of Amsterdam is now expanding to different cities such as London and New York. He aims to participate environments of the world into his pieces by using considerable efforts to bring the two together. His journey through the cities on bicycle leaves him soaking up the backdrop of the streets, which then, later on, translates into the passion he puts into creating his compositions. The result is a refreshing take on pop art that excites the viewer with strong suggestions of color, texture, and design. PROVENANCE: Lilac Gallery Collection. Consigned by the gallery directly from Michiel Folkers Studio AKA 'Gieler'. The artwork is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by the artist. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.

"You'll Never Know" Mixed Media Figurative Collage Composition on Panel Board
By Jon Davenport
Located in New York, NY
This piece depicts a colorful collage composition portrait of Marilyn Monroe, as Jon Davenport explores the process of deconstructing iconic imagery from the past and present. Davenport start’s out with photos of his paint-stained studio floor and collages in articles/advertising from an array of vintage magazines collected over the years; plus any other interesting stuff captured on his travels. He then transfers the images to a panel board, layering them on with gel medium, together with strokes, splashes, drips, and splats of paint. Once it's dry, another layer of gel medium is poured on to give it a melting effect. After it drys off again, another layer of paint is added to embellish a few areas and to accentuate or fade out certain aspects. And then, he finally adds a coat of polyurethane for protection and making the colors pop. This unique work is executed on a wood panel board and comes ready to be displayed with hanging wire on verso, signed by the artist lower right. Art measures 36 x 36 in From biology student to owning and running a creative agency in London to a career as a fine artist, life has taken Jon Davenport on a rewarding and unconventional journey. Despite his scientific beginnings, he’s always had a strong artistic streak weaving its way through his different career paths. Growing up in Ipswich, UK, Jon was always an avid drawer, and could often be found with a pencil and paper in hand. With the arrival of his first computer, he embraced the new frontier of digital art and had work published in one of those early computer magazines. His creative urges took a backseat to get a biology degree at Brunel University in London. It was afterward, in his first job working at the Archant newspaper group in Ipswich, that he quickly progressed from plate maker to becoming an integral member of the art studio. It was during this time that he taught himself photoshop, desktop publishing, and graphic & web design. After a few years, he set up a design agency, and eventually went full time and moved to London. This proved to be a successful move, working for a number of clients such as Nike and Virgin, and gaining praise from the likes of Richard Branson and Tony Blair. It wasn’t until Jon moved to the USA to marry his wife, Atlanta artist Christy Kinard...
