About the Item

Henry Bernard Chalon (1770–1849) Newmarket, 1807 Oil on canvas, signed and dated centre middle 39 x 49 inches Provenance: Richard Green, London This impressive and finely detailed sporting painting by Henry Bernard Chalon, dated 1807, depicts a celebrated scene at Newmarket, the historic heart of English horse racing. Signed prominently at the centre, the work is a masterful example of Chalon’s early 19th-century sporting art, combining the dignity of equestrian portraiture with the atmospheric grandeur of the English landscape. In the composition, a sleek bay thoroughbred stands proudly at rest, held by a groom in a red coat, while a second figure sits astride a pony to the right, observing the scene. A check blanket and flask lie in the foreground, small details that reinforce the intimacy and realism of the moment. The low horizon, expansive sky, and muted landscape backdrop place the emphasis squarely on the horse, whose elegant physique and poised stance exemplify the ideals of English bloodstock at the beginning of the 19th century. In the distance, the rolling heathland of Newmarket—long regarded as the cradle of British horseracing—anchors the composition both geographically and historically. Henry Bernard Chalon was one of the most accomplished animal and sporting painters of his generation. Born in London in 1770, he studied at the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited regularly from 1788. His talent quickly brought him prestigious patronage: he was appointed Animal Painter to the Duchess of York, and later to the Prince Regent (later George IV). Chalon specialised in equestrian portraits, prize livestock, and sporting scenes, producing works that celebrated the refinement and prestige of English country pursuits. He was also deeply influenced by earlier masters such as Stubbs, yet his paintings have a distinctly early Regency sensibility, marked by clear light, refined draughtsmanship, and an emphasis on the aristocratic elegance of his subjects. The date of this painting, 1807, situates it within a particularly important moment in British sporting culture. Newmarket, by then already long established as the epicentre of thoroughbred racing, was closely associated with the patronage of both Charles II in the 17th century and the subsequent aristocratic class of the Georgian and Regency periods. Chalon’s representation of Newmarket not only records the sporting traditions of the period but also reflects the social prestige attached to horse racing, which was inseparable from the life of the English gentry. Large-scale canvases of this kind were highly sought after in the period, serving both as records of prized bloodstock and as decorative statements in country houses. The dimensions of this work—nearly 40 by 50 inches—place it among Chalon’s more ambitious commissions, designed to command attention within a grand interior. The horse’s finely observed musculature, polished coat, and the careful delineation of tack and trappings all reveal the artist’s technical mastery and attention to detail. With provenance from Richard Green, London, one of the most respected dealers in British sporting art, this painting represents an important and historically significant work by Chalon. It embodies the enduring prestige of Newmarket, the traditions of Regency sporting culture, and the enduring appeal of equestrian portraiture in the English canon.
