About the Item

Hen and Chicks in Basket is a 12.5 x 15, oil on canvas still life and animal scene by female, American painter, Mary Russell Smith. The painting is framed and signed en verso. Mary Russell Smith was born at Edgehill, close to Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. She was a true lover of nature and all the things of nature, wandering the fields and woods near her childhood home, gathering objects that caught her eye. Smith had much influence to become an an artist because all in her family were painters. Her father, Russell, was a well-known landscapist, her mother a painter of flowers, and her brother Xanthus, a marine painter, was also well-known. She attended no art schools, and started to paint at age fourteen, when she was taught by her mother. When she died in 1878 at age 36, her father summed up the inspiration nature held for Smith, and her love of it, in "A Brief Sketch of the Life of Mary Smith, the Painter." "Such habits early in life no doubt laid the foundation of that strong love of nature that was more a passion than a predilection, and remained the ruling principle of her life and art." As a child, she had enjoyed tending her flock of chickens, and these birds were often represented in her paintings.

“Hen and Chicks” '1867' Antique Oil Painting by Andrea Cherubini, Italian
Located in Shippensburg, PA
An exquisite interior scene depicting a mother hen as she roosts while her chicks peck about the room, four feeding on the grain in a simple white porcelain plate while several gather to drink from a pottery vessel filled with water. The interior suggests the location is perhaps the storeroom or root cellar with a shelf stacked with garlic and a covered vessel hanging on the wall over the hen. The work is signed in the lower left corner "A Cherubini 1867, Roma" and the reverse retains labels from the gallery of Schillay Fine Art, Inc. in New York and subsequently an inventory label for Faultless Starch Bonami Company. The work has been professionally conserved and remains in pristine condition. Born in Rome in 1833, Andrea Cherubini was primarily a landscape and seascape painter, preferring to capture views of Southern Italy. A typical example would include Drawing in the nets, Sorrento offered at Christies, London in January of 2013, ultimately achieving 4375 GBP. The Benezit notes a few of his scenes as particularly interesting, including Seascape (1883), Eight Views of Capri and Views of the Island of Ischia and Surroundings. [Source: Benezit] Artist listings and bibliography: E. Benezit Dictionary of Artists, Vol. III, Gründ, 2006, p. 901; this notes the sale of four paintings, each described "Hen and Chicks...
