Don Pollack BIOGRAPHY Don Pollack is a Painter and Adjunct Associate Professor of Visual Communication at theSchool of t he Art Institute of Chicago. His work investigates among other things, the relationship between personal mythologies and representation in painting and how it may simultaneously give reference to a narrative.Working in cross disciplines has influenced his perspectives as projects begin with an epic adventure. Conceptually proceeding from the premise that all vision is historic and constructed, Pollack’s research starts with the planning of a long distance trek,– such as a 3000 mile journey via bicycle following Lewis and Clark. His work has utilized maps, documents, photography, painting, and installation.This work was routed in a previous investigation into the role of museums in the process of forming collective memory. Don studied design at the University of Illinois and painting at the Ohio State University where he received his MFA.The state of Illinois has recognized his history based work with a special bicentennial edition of the ‘Order of Abraham Lincoln’ award. He has exhibited nationally and internationally and has shown many solo shows in, Chicago, NewYork, Atlanta, and Canada. True Life Novelettes is the most recent addition to the bigger project; Crossing The Great Divide which is loosely a series of landscape and history projects I began in 2009. It explores among other things, current events and personal literary interests through the construction of large scale [48x72”] book cover paintings. I use a variety of images juxtaposed with bylines and misplaced authors in order to create new meanings. I read the print edition of the New York Times for current content and subject matter, and because I still like the feel of a large document and printed typography. Recently and with a twist of prescient irony, a found myself reading a special supplemental section of the Times declaring that “the post-text future is here!” Could that be good for painting, now that we are entering an online culture ruled by pictures! But if our information will become dominated by pictures, slogans, and emotional announcements, I do fear that the arguments driving political discourse will soon become completely supplicated by popular memes. What should the new best sellers look like? Do I have enough time to read them? Underneath all this fanfare is it possible that the discussion will also be reduced to the display of personal artifacts of material culture? In the fashion section of today’s Times the headline reads, “Can you wear Dior to the Protest March?” (Enter my books.) I first start by writing columns and mixing up the authors with made-up titles (from films and books) and looking for strange connections to create a metaphorical tension. I then look for popular images and taglines in the news, print media, and the publishing business, and search for catchy phrases from film dialog. Then I combine everything into a new design layout to form a hybrid of ‘true life novelettes’ and modern classics. Climate change denial and alt/fake news declarations become great sources for topics in the overwhelming modern noise machine too grim to bear. I cancel my cable subscription. But what are the conditions for making a painting in a world saturated with images? While the representational, abstract, and technical concerns of painting collapse into the same memory well, what are we to say especially when we have “seen all the films and seen all the pictures”? The works of Tursic and Mille have pointed me into this new direction. In order to visually reclaim myself from disappearing into the ruins, I adopt a strategy combining editorial cartooning, oil painting and graphic design. I am attracted to those handsome publisher’s design formats, especially the ones that utilize carefully-placed typography and eclectic images– such as Everyman’s Library, Penguin Books, and Barnes and Noble. There are colored stripes running along the sides of the covers identifying the modern story collections, with the authors’ names set in script fonts. These various formats also hold the space to paint a combination of historic events and contemporary imagery from popular culture. I also patrol the web and search for vintage advertising campaigns for copy. Perhaps this grimness can have an uplifting thread. However, Virginie Vuillaume in Another Girl warns, “desire leads to disaster, partly bound up with fiction but also with death and catastrophe. The fate of those who are in love with images is always tragic, desire always leads to disaster.” So now Tursic and Mille’s painting that appropriated an image of a house on fire from a scene from Andrei Tarkovski’s film The Sacrifice also becomes my subject matter for the cover of the Year of Living Dangerously. For 2017, The Year of the Eclipse, the cover takes direction from a modern classic rendition of Frankenstein, with his head screwed on backwards. Maybe the only way left to paint now is by moving things forward by the only way possible,– through other mediums. The byline lyric for Eclipse is now taken from the Youngbloods popular song of 1967, Get Together,–so come on Frankenstein, ‘Smile on Your Brother’. Don Pollack EDUCATION m.f.a. This is a framed original painting. Biography Creating paintings inspired by western movies and by Remington and Russell, he is a native of the West, having been born and raised in rural Colorado. He studied art at Baylor University in Waco, Texas; at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, and at the University of Colorado, Boulder where he earned a Master's Degree in 1979. For two decades he worked as curator at the Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings, Montana, before leaving in 1999 to begin work as a full-time painter and independent curator. His work is in the collections of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming; the Art Museum of Missoula; and the Yellowstone Art Museum; the Federal Reserve Bank in Helena, Montana; and the Deaconness Medical Center in Billings, Montana. Artist Statement For a long time, the images in my paintings have been identifiably, even iconically, western-stagecoaches and false-front main streets, poker games and gun battles, cowboys, Indians, cavalry troopers and horses, all suspended in a choreographed matrix of dancing paint. Distinct from the traditional western genre-which inventories the minutia of cowboy gear or tells sentimental stories of rangeland romance-my paintings embody something more elemental and timeless, animated and abstract. The images tend to be stark, graphic, and charged with painterly energy. Though they are derived from fugitive television images, the paintings, as paintings, are still, silent and non-ephemeral. They register the technological transfer of primal shadows onto the electroluminescent screens of our collective consciousness, a shimmering blur of perception and memory transposed in an interchange of gesture and description, painted marks simultaneously arresting and embodying movement. I've always liked what a painter friend, Marc Vischer, wrote in 1988 about an early group of my western paintings. Now, I'm fourteen years closer to actualizing my vision for this work, and his astute remarks seem more pertinent today than they did then. He wrote in part, "For McConnell, a searing light emanates from a new desert: that of television. And from that most desolate backdrop, he salvages fragments from a movie world that spoke of honor in a land that was lawless. In a romantic sense, McConnell's works are a visual seance. Figures, like specters distorted through intense heat waves, are captured from their eternity of 24 frames a second. Their shapes and shadows are brought back into a radically different world and given substance and texture. It is an impossible attempt to freeze them, to arrest the present's ceaseless molestation of the past, to close off the continuum. Sometimes this is done darkly and thickly as an emphatic gesture of permanence. In other works a few light strokes quickly applied suggest the ephemeral nature of film and perhaps the fleeting nature of our own lives." I have been examining new imagery in my paintings, drawing subjects from Mexican graphic novelas, modern women and men of romance and mystery from the mid-20th century, motorcycles and airplanes. The end titles of movies, stated in several languages, have inspired me to begin a new series of cross-media translations in both acrylic and watercolor. My paintings have long begun where the movies have left off. The elements of water and light co-mingle in some pieces from this series and in others which take the viewpoint of a swimmer, watching other swimmers from the wet side of this aqueous membrane, looking up toward the light. My arrival in Montana in 1982 brought me into intimate contact with some of the most storied places of the historic West and also gave me the opportunity to study the paintings of two of the most influential codifiers of western imagery, Frederic Remington and Charlie Russell...

My subjects are at first glance close to home-new mothers, friends, lovers, artists, dancers-but are then quickly placed at a distance via edgy modification, rigorous technique, minimal contexts and composition, and idiosyncratic use of color. I am also interested in social presentation, artifice, and simulation as they relate to my subjects. I hope to peel away a gossamer thin layer of reality, not just to document the real but also to reveal what might be. BIOGRAPHY Given my restless history, it is curious that I became a figurative painter in New York City. My maternal Grandparents fled Hitler's Germany in the late 1930's. Feroz Khan - Untitled Acrylic on Canvas, 55 x 42 inches About Artist : Mohammad Feroz Khan was born in 1978 and brought up in Delhi. He have not undergone any formal training in Art but gained experience first from his Father Late Mohd Ibrahim Khan, a Banner Painter. Subsequently, under the able tutelage of renowned Artist Late Manjit Bawa (Guruji - his Mentor in Art) he studied and learned Art for 14 years. Bawa took much care to train him to use brush and pastels on a variety of subjects, also guided him to savor the beauty and nuances of Texture. Then, as an initial step, his Guru guided him through a maze of depictable visuals scattered over the all too familiar places of Delhi. He asked him to draw inspiration from real life. Deferential to my master’s academic style of figuration, he soon convinced his guru of deft brushmanship and ability to create naturalistic human and animal forms, avoiding explicit linear delineation, while projecting solid masses. He chose to see the ordinary things and scenes that make up for our everyday life. He look at the little details of a tailor working on a manual sewing machine or a street-side vendor selling a cool drink on a hot summer day or rickshaw pullers or beggars and various other street vendors – denizens of the city’s poorest quarters. It is the sheer simplicity of each of these activities that appeals him and is reflected through his Canvas.
