Biography
Reveau Bassett (1897 - 1981)
A popular wildlife artist, Reveau Bassett was born in Dallas, Texas. His early art training was at the Art Students League in New York where he was a pupil of Joseph Pennell, William Leigh, and Boardman Robinson. He also studied at the National Academy of Design where he would later exhibit. His painting often reflects an influence from the atmospheric works of Frank Reaugh with whom he worked and studied on many painting expeditions throughout Texas and New Mexico. Settling in North Texas, he became one of that state's foremost wildlife painters. His mural, hanging in the Dallas Petroleum Club, is also well known. During the late 1960's and early 1970's Reveau Bassett taught painting to the Garden and Arts group of Irving Texas. The Art Chairman of the group, a wonderful lady named Pete Fernandez, invited Mr. Bassett to teach. Mr. Bassett had a fondness for Irving and its small art community, and he came on Tuesday nights, often teaching in the Union Bower Church. In addition to Pete the other ladies in the art group were Sara Clear, Edna Ganser, Lil Cartwright, Liz Strickland, Delores Kleiner, Edith Stinnet, Mary White, Marie Petrasek, and Margaret Atterlee. Although they came to paint, they ended up learning about life and philosophy, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. But these ladies were not just studio painters; they were a hearty bunch of women. Reveau would lead them out to fields carrying sack lunches and coffee. They climbed in and out of barbed wire pastures, and occasionally they were chased by bulls. Some of the ladies would join Reveau Bassett and Frank Reaugh in their travels out to West Texas in Frank's old touring bus named the "Cicada". Art supplies, cooking equipment, and camping equipment were all piled on top of the Cicada. Men and women artists would go on these trips, but no 'hanky panky' was allowed. On these trips each person was required to paint three painting per day, or else Mr. Reaugh would not speak to them.

Edward Chalmers Leavitt (1842 - 1904)
Edward Chalmers Leavitt, artist, was born in Providence, Rhode Island, March 9, 1842, the son of Rev. Jonathan and Charlotte Esther (Stearns) Leavitt. His paternal ancestor was John Leavitt, who came to Massachusetts Bay in the first ship and settled in Hingham. On the maternal side, he is descended from John Alden and Priscilla Mullens, who came to Plymouth in the Mayflower.
Leavitt was educated in private schools in Providence, and at Kimball Union Academy, Meriden, New Hampshire. During the Civil
War in 1862 and 1863, he served in the navy on the U.S.S. Galena. In his profession of artist, Mr. Leavitt is especially noted as a painter of fruit, flowers and still life.
He exhibited in the National Academy for several years and has made many successful exhibitions in Providence and Boston. He was a member of the Boston and Providence art clubs, and the Providence Press Club. He was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. In politics his proclivities are mainly Republican. He has been twice married: first, May 19, 1877, to Ellen M. Fuller; and second, April 22, 1880, to Elizabeth S. Chace.
Submitted November 2004 by Edward Bentley, Art Collector and Researcher from Lansing, Michigan.

Edward C. Leavitt, born in 1842, has been described as "Providence, Rhode Island's leading still-life painter" in the late 19th Century. (Zellman 324) His teacher, James Morgan Lewin, was a prominent still-life painter in Fall River, Massachusetts, a neighboring town.
Leavitt, a detailed, sharp-focused, realistic painter, was in love with texture and light, and was prolific and successful, painting a variety of still life subjects including flowers, fruit and even fish and dead game animals. His objects, including costly antiques and household decorative items, were often placed on ornamental, gleaming surfaces.
He was a frequent exhibitor at the National Academy of Design in the 1870s and 1890s. The artist, who died in 1904, moved from a position of success and popularity to being ignored for many years until the publication of William H. Gerdts and Russell Burke's American Still-Life Painting in 1971. It is uncertain whether this disastrous loss of respect took place because Leavitt's work declined in quality during the last decade of his life, or because he was a victim of the periodic shifts in taste and fashion that afflict the arts.

Biography from Roger King Fine Art
Edward Leavitt was one of the leading still life artists of nineteenth century New England. He lived and worked in Providence, and studied with James Morgan Lewin, a leading painter of the Fall River School, which, in the late 19th Century, was one of the most important centers of still life painting.
While Lewin branched out into other types of painting, Leavitt remained devoted to the art of the still life. His paintings are sharply focused, realistic, and carefully finished. Ornate objects such as urns, ewers, platters, cut glassware...

Mother Duck & Ducklings
Oil on panel, signed
Image size: 9.5 inches x 15.25 inches
Size including frame: 16.5 inches x 22.25 inches
A delightful painting of a mother duck with her ducklings by constant Ludovic Artz. A white duck can be seen sitting on a river bank surrounded by her five ducklings. Two of the ducklings are shown taking rest by her side as the others forage close by.
Constant David Ludovic Artz was born in Paris on 3 June, 1870, the son of David Adolph Constant Artz (1837-1890) and Josephine Jouanin. His father was a Dutch artist who had moved his family to Paris to set up a studio. The family returned to Holland in 1874 and settled in the Hague. Artz was taught art by his father and at the age of 12 enrolled at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. He also received tuition from Hendrik Mesdag (1831-1915) and Willem Maris (1844-1910) who had an influence on his subject matter.
He married Johanna Sophia Cecilia Ginjoolen at the Hague on 5 July, 1893. One of the witnesses was the artist Tony Offermans (1854-1911) whom he was apprenticed to at his studio. The couple went on to have two children together and to supplement his income, Artz also worked as an art teacher. One of his pupils was Leendert Scheltema (1876-1966).
After divorcing from his first wife in 1915, he married Lucie Sophie van der Hoeven in 1917. At some point he moved to Soestdijk, living there until 1926 when he relocated to Katwijk at Sea in. He returned to Soestdijk in 1931 where he died on 23 February, 1951.
Like his father, Artz was fascinated by nature and after painting a series of landscapes and seascapes began producing scenes featuring ducks and waterfowl usually on or by lakes and rivers. He was an expert at painting the play of light upon water and also preferred to work with smaller canvasses. His work can be found in private and public collections including the Rijksmuseum.
Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.
