This painting is oil on 7 canvas panels, each 7 feet high and is 30 feet wide TOTAL and is monochromatic black, after Desportes, Brascassat, Weenix, Hondecoeter, Oudry, Landseer, Snyders, van Huysum, Bellini, and van Es. The title references Psalm 23. "While we like to believe we're righteous, compassionate, and continually evolving, history tells a different story. These Green Pastures, while 'peopled' with beasts, offers a contemplation on human nature, one of tremendous potential that is so often undercut by our bad behavior."
Reed's primary focus has been the rich vein of Northern European art from the mid-17th through 18th centuries, a period of enlightenment and profound interest in science, nature, and the animal world. Animals were assigned human traits (peacock:vanity; dog:fidelity), and nature itself was considered a symbol of God's providence - a commonly held belief within the stratified, gentry dominated social order of the time.
Reed (b. 1958, New York, NY) lives and works in Boston, MA. She is a recipient of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts Maud Morgan Award and a Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant. Shelley Reed
Shelley Reed was born in New York City in 1958 and currently lives and works in Boston, Massachusetts. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Brandeis University and graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1984. Reed has shown nationally in both galleries and museums such as Danese/Corey in New York City, Fitchburg Art Museum, Massachusetts; Columbia Museum of Art, South Carolina and Sears-Peyton Gallery, New York City. Furthermore, Reed’s works are in several public and private collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Art Institute of Chicago, Fidelity Investment Corporation, Boston and National Museum of Wildlife Art, Jackson, Wyoming. She is the recipient of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Travelling Fellowship in 2013 and Maud Morgan Award from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 2005. Reed borrows visual fragments from predominantly 17th and 18th-century Northern European art, citing the artists of these works like a dutiful scholar.
