Walter John James was the son of Walter James, 2nd Baron Northbourne and his wife Edith Lane. He was educated at Harrow School and Magdalen College, Oxford. He succeeded at 3rd Baron Northbourne on the death of his father in 1923.
His career as an artist began when he studied under the Italian landscape artist Giovanni “Nino” Costa. Frederic Leighton and George Heming Mason had met Costa in the 1850s, painting landscapes in the Roman Campagna and they encouraged other British artists to travel to Italy to study with the master. This group included Walter James, Matthew Ridley Corbet, George Howard William Blake Richmond and Edgar Barclay among others. In the winter of 1883-84, guided and encouraged by Costa, they formed the Etruscan School. The group, which also included a number of Italian artists, were all inspired by their sketching trips in the countryside around Rome. The style of painting was characterized by breadth of handling, subtle tones and broad panoramas. They initially exhibited their landscapes at the Dudley Gallery, Grosvenor Gallery and New Gallery. In addition, James also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Fine Art Society and the Royal Society of British Artists. He held four one man shows in London. He was appointed a Trustee of the Wallace Collection.

"Jaywalker"
A native of Texas, Chuck Mauldin has been painting in oil since the age of twelve. His interest in watercolor and pencil drawing grew during his years spent in Louisiana. With his move back to Texas, he has renewed his focus on oil painting, using this medium in a realistic yet painterly style. Striving to quickly capture color and mood with a direct "alla prima" technique is one of his main objectives in painting outdoors on-location. Cows, cowboys and Native Americans often enrich the landscape in his studio work, while anything can inspire his plein air paintings.
