George William Mote
Sheep in a Surrey Landscape - British Victorian art sunny landscape oil painting

Circa 1870

About the Item

This lovely Surrey landscape oil painting is by noted British exhibited artist George William Mote. Painted circa 1870, the composition is a landscape with a stunning view into the distance on the right. In the foreground, a group of sheep rest on the path, their shepherd and dog on the grass nearby. A figure ascends the path towards the scene. The vibrant greens and high sun beating down through wispy clouds really bring this summer scene to life. A fantastic painting and example of Mote's work. Signed lower right. Provenance: London estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a complimentary frame, 38 inches by 28 inches framed and in good condition. George William Mote (1832-1909) was a self-taught artist, who worked as gardener and caretaker to Sir Thomas Phillipps, the great manuscript collector at Middle Hill, near Broadway Worcester. His early paintings, mostly of the house and gardens at Middle Hill, are painted in an evocative style, which faithfully reproduces the scene. Later he became a fulltime artist and enjoyed success in exhibiting at the Royal Academy 1857- 1873, the British Institution and in the Provinces.
