Description: This evocative coastal scene by Tony Herbert (1927–2024) captures a working boatyard at low tide, most likely located along the Suffolk or Norfolk coastline. The composition is structured along a wide dirt track leading to the shoreline, with wooden fishing huts and various beached vessels flanking either side. A vivid red flag on one of the huts adds a striking contrast to the otherwise earthy palette of ochres, browns, and sage greens.
Herbert’s skillful use of dry brushwork and soft gradients suggests an early morning or late afternoon light, with long shadows cast and the hazy horizon gently softening the scene. Boats rest on blocks or shingle, their masts rising into a cloudless sky, while grassy textures in the foreground add a grounded sense of place.
While not titled or location-marked, this is clearly part of Herbert’s series of plein air works set along the East Anglian coast, where working harbours and fishing life were among his favourite subjects. The style and subject strongly echo his paintings of Southwold Harbour or the area near Walberswick.
This work would resonate with collectors drawn to maritime landscapes, British boatyards, or watercolours capturing moments of calm industry. A timeless scene that speaks to the enduring rhythm of life on the edge of land and sea.
