About the Item

Signed lower center with artist monogram, 'B.S.' for Benjamin Silva (Brazilian, born 1927) and dated with roman numerals, 1968; additionally signed, verso, dated and titled. A dramatic and animated oil painting of a crowd scene showing the feared, mounted police of Mexico City in action against the students in the demonstrations of October 2nd that preceded the opening of the Mexican Olympic Games held in 1968. Benjamin Silva first studied painting with the artist Inimá Paula and Sigaud at Rio the People's School and, subsequently, at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. He later attended the college of Arts nnd Crafts where he studied with Orlando Silva. He then moved to Paris where he attended the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere (1960-63) and studied under the Post-Impressionist painter, Maurice Brianchon. The recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards, Benjamin Silva has exhibited with success worldwide including in New York, Washington DC, Venice, London, Lisbon and Belgrade, among numerous other cities.. This notable California artist lived in New York before settling in Napa, California. Influenced by the Bay Area Figurative Painters, Maxwell has exhibited widely and with success and is the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards, including first place in the 'Watermedia National' from Long Beach Arts in California in 1998. Signed lower right, 'Z. Kavin' for Zena Kavin (American, 1912-2003) and dated 1966. Born in Berkeley, California, Zena Kavin studied at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and, privately, with Kravchenko in Moscow. She lived in Berkeley and in Oakland her entire life, except for four years spent in New Mexico in the late 1930s. In 1949, she married artist Jon Cornin and settled with him in Oakland. Under the peudonym Corka, the Cornins produced cartoons for the Saturday Evening Post and the New Yorker. Kavin worked in various media, including wood engraving, lithography and sculpture. She was a member of the San Francisco Artists Association and exhibited with them as well as at the San Francisco Museum of Art Inaugural (1935), the California–Pacific International Exposition, San Diego (1935), the Golden Gate International Exposition (1939). Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Davis Art Center, the New Mexico Museum of Art and the Oakland Museum of California.
