He further honed his skills studying at the Académie Julian in Paris. After returning to Ohio in the late 1920s, Wands taught painting at both the Cleveland School of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art. In 1930, Wands moved to Denver to head the art program at Colorado Women's College, where he spent the next 17 years. During this time, he frequently visited Taos, New Mexico, spending eleven summers there between 1930 and 1940, which deeply influenced his work. In 1947, Wands dedicated himself fully to his art, leaving his teaching position at the Women's College. In 1955, he opened a studio and gallery in Estes Park, Colorado, further solidifying his presence in the Colorado art scene. Known as the "Dean of Colorado Landscape Painters," Wands served three terms as the President of the Denver Artists Guild and held the position of Chairman of the Denver Art Commission for 16 years.
