About the Item

The "Caravansary at Shiraz," is accompanied by the book "From The Black Sea Through Persia and India" by Weeks. In his book, on page 115, Weeks provides an insightful explanation about this magnificent artwork Notes: Signed "E.L. Weeks" l.r., with the artist's estate sale stencil on the reverse, title and date "c. 1894" alternate title in earlier publications (see below). Illustrated in From the Black Sea Through Persia and India, published in 1896, in which the painting at hand is illustrated in the section describing Shiraz (p. 115). The estate stamp on the reverse reads, "EDWIN LORD WEEKS SALE/MARCH 15, 16, & 17, 1905" The presentation plaque on the frame lists an incorrect title, "North African Scene." Provenance: Edwin Lord Weeks Estate Sale, March 15-17, 1905, as Lot 4 (A Persian Cavaransary); through to Christie's New York, American Watercolors -Drawings-Paintings and Sculpture of the 19th and 20th Centuries, March 11, 1988, Lot 65 (as Caravanseray [sic] at Shiraz, Persia); to private collection. Skinner Auction, Nov. 2021 Caravansary at Shiraz is one of Week’s magnificent art. Weeks explains about it in his book, “From The Black Sea Through Persia and India,” on page 114 Weeks exhibited his work in nearly every annual Salon (Paris). He earned a Medal of Honor in 1884, then a Third Class Medal in 1889, followed by a gold medal at the 1889 International Exhibition, and finally the Legion of Honor in 1896 Description: Edwin Lord Weeks (1849-1903) was an American artist renowned for his Orientalist paintings. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Weeks showed an early interest in art and pursued formal training at the Académie Julian in Paris. He specialized in capturing the vibrant landscapes, architectural marvels, and cultural scenes of the Middle East and North Africa.
