About the Item

Like many of the great French Impressionists Emile Cagniart (1851-1911) was inspired by the River Seine and its surrounding landscapes between in Ile de France and Normandy. Interestingly, Cagniart's work features in the collection of the Fine Arts Museum of Rouen, a city on the Seine where he often painted. And of course paintings by the Cagniart also can be found in the collections of the Musée D'Orsay in Paris. The artist chose to paint the present picture halfway between the two cities, having set up his easel set up directly on the riverbank to capture the unique light and life along the Seine. The Seine Valley is still known for its picturesque views, villages, and the characteristic architecture seen in the picture, like the traditional buildings and the distinct rocky outcrops often found along the river's curves. We see a washerwoman spreading out her gleamingly white laundry to dry, while a local is walking on the towpath. Academically trained, Émile Antoine Joseph Cagniart had studied with Antoine Guillemet, one of the precursors of Impressionism. He made his debut at the 1877 Salon. Highly regarded by his peers, he obtained a third-class medal in 1887, an honorable mention in 1889 and a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition of the same year. he was awarded a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. In that year also, he was admitted to the Salon's selection committee. He was a member of the committee of the Society of French Artists and vice-president of the Friendly Association of Landscape Artists. Named Knight of the Legion of Honor, he was also an officer of the Academy and a recipient of the Order of Nichan Iftikhar. His work features in museums such as the Musée d'Orsay and the Fondation Custodia. Our painting by Cagniart measures 73 x 54 cm for the canvas alone and is signed at the lower left. The overall framed size is 66 x 87 cm.

A wonderful view of the heartbreakingly beautiful Fontainebleau/Barbizon region, which was home to some of the greatest painters of the 19th and early 20th Century. The village is just a short walk away from Grez-sur-Loing, where John Singer Sargent, Francis Brooks Chadwick, Robert Vonnoh, Edward Simmons...
