About the Item
Signed, titled, and dated on verso.
A leading Peruvian artist, Ernesto Gutierrez, was born in Lima, Peru, in 1941. His father was a Spaniard and his mother a descendant of the Incas. Upon completion of his high school education, Gutierrez entered the School of Fine Arts in Lima, Peru, where in 1964 he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and was awarded a Gold Medal. Sponsored by the Brazilian government, Gutierrez received the Itamarti Scholarship and studied for two years (1966-67) at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, while extensively exhibiting his works throughout the art centers of South America: Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Cordova, Santiago de Chile, Lima, etc. In 1971, Gutierrez was granted a Fulbright Scholarship and studied at the University of Wisconsin where in 1974 he received a Master of Fine Arts .
Gutierrez has been influenced by both local artistic factors: Pre-Columbian forms, native-popular Peruvian art, and also by modern French masters, such as Cézanne, Gaugin and, to a certain extent, Matisse. He is not of the school that needs the art critic to explain pallid lines to uncomprehending viewers. The boldness of Gutierrez’s colors, shocking pink, chartreuse, mauve hues and the whole gamut of blues, purples and greens – sometimes underlined and emphasized by opposite colors, such as black, maize or even pure white, adds to their dramatic effect, creating almost sensual excitement. In some of his paintings, Gutierrez assumes a cubist-realist simplification of forms and volumes and a precise rendering of surfaces. Gutierrez’s sensibility strikes as essentially Spanish while his inspiration derives from his Inca heritage, Peruvian landscapes and folklore.

'Músicos Andes' is an original oil painting signed by the Peruvian-American painter Ernesto Gutierrez and is an excellent example of the work he has been producing in recent years. The composition shows four musicians, playing a harp, flute, guitar and violin respectively. The composition is unified by the repeating pattern of the figures, like the repeating motifs of a song, all of whom wear the same hat in their arrangement across the canvas. Paintings like this show the artist's observation of daily life on the streets of Peru, but at the same time elevate these figures with mystery and magic.

Francisco Bores López (Madrid, May 5, 1898 - Paris, May 10, 1972) was a Spanish painter of the so-called New School of Paris.
His artistic training originated both in the Cecilio Pla painting academy, where he met Pancho Cossío, Manuel Ángeles Ortiz or Joaquín Peinado, and in the literary gatherings in Madrid related to ultraism.
At this time he made engravings and woodcuts for a large number of magazines such as Horizonte, Cruz y Raya, Index, Revista de Occidente. In 1922 he participated in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts.
In 1925 he participated in the first exhibition of the Iberian Artists Society. The limited success of this exhibition pushes him to go to Paris. In this city he shared a studio with the Spanish painter Pancho Cossío and also met Picasso and Juan Gris.
In 1927 he held his first solo exhibition in Paris. From this moment on, Bores integrates himself into the Parisian artistic environment where he will live practically his entire life. In 1928, his first exhibition in a gallery in the United States, in 1930 he exhibited again, within a group exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
In the following years, he continued exhibiting in different galleries in Paris, such as the Georges Petit Gallery, the Bernheim Gallery and the Vavin Raspail Gallery. He also participates in several group exhibitions, highlighting the Exhibition of Contemporary Spanish Art...
