About the Item

Title: French Village Harbour Scene with Boat and Tower by Fanch Lel by Fanche Lel Size: 10.5 inches (height) x 7.25 inches (width) Gouache painting on card, unframed Condition: The painting is in good condition, with minor signs of handling at the edges. Provenance: All the paintings we have for sale by this artist have come from the artists estate and have had no previous owners at all. Description: In this small but striking harbour scene, French artist Fanch Lel distills an entire village into a few confident shapes and gentle washes. A singular white boat sits at the base of the image, its curved hull and soft reflection echoing the curved outlines of the buildings and tower behind. What makes this piece especially unusual is the vertically striped paper—likely repurposed or pre-printed—which divides the composition into soft bands of colour: dusky blue, blush lavender, pale ochre, and sage green. Rather than distracting, these stripes feel integrated, almost like beams of filtered light crossing the scene. The use of pencil underdrawing adds a raw, sketchbook-like immediacy, while Lel’s restrained palette and careful placement of line elevate it into something far more poetic than its size might suggest.
