About the Item
'The Port of Le Havre', pencil on art paper, by French artist Fred Pailhès (circa 1950s). Le Havre was only a fishing village until 1517, when Francis I had a harbour built there named Havre-de-Grâce. Enlarged and fortified under Cardinal de Richelieu and Louis XVI, it was further improved under Napoleon III in the mid-19th century. Almost three quarters of Le Havre's buildings were destroyed during WWII but were subsequently rebuilt. With all of its historical importance taken into consideration, the city is ultimately a sailor town. Just the sort the artist, Fred Pailhès, a native of the city, loves to depict. It seems to be a typically cloudy day in Normandy, the artist having created such atmosphere with his use of only pencil. It could be a sepia negative of a photo from the era. Such character and ambiance. The artwork is in good overall condition and has been newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. The artist signed the work in the lower left hand. Upon request, a video may be provided.
About the Artist: French artist Fred Pailhès, (1902-1991) born in Le Havre, is primarily known for his paintings of ports and seascapes including Marseille and Nice in the south of France and Le Havre and Honfleur in the north. He is also known for his striking portraits of bohemians, vagabonds and everyday people, capturing humorous and sometimes strange expressions of people in the street. He loved sailor bars, music halls, lost souls - women and their eroticism, whatever he saw as long as he found mouvement and colour. Saucy scenes of cabarets and bistros and, of course, women are depicted in his art. There are innumerable drawings of women and dancers - in particular, Loulou, Pailhès' favourite from the Folies Bergères cabaret in Paris.
Pailhès' work has been exhibited at the Musée Montparnasse and at the Chateaux Borély in Marseille. Pailhes died in 1991. Since 1986 Pailhès' works have been auctioned over 700 times and continue to increase in value. This piece of history is available for you.

Quay by the Bridge in Paris
By Roland Dubuc
Located in London, GB
'Quay by the Bridge in Paris', watercolour on art paper, by Roland Dubuc (circa 1970s-80s). The broad Parisian river Seine divides the city into the left and right banks. The Left Bank, or Rive Gauche is famous for the Latin Quarter while the Right Bank is better known for attractions like Arc de Triomphe, Montmartre, and the Louvre. A trip here simply isn’t complete without a stroll along this romantic river. And a cruise on the Seine or drinks aboard an anchored boat along the quay is a wonderful experience as well. The artist Dubuc created many artworks with the Seine as backdrop. You can have this one right in your living room. In good overall condition, the piece is newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. Upon request a video of the painting may be provided.
About the Artist: Roland DuBuc (1924-1998), French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, he moved to Rouen where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time he struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing. He moved to other cities later where he met painters including, among others, Fred Pailhès...

'Port of Saint-Malo', French Modern School
Located in London, GB
'Port of Saint-Malo', oil on canvas affixed to board, French Modern School (1984). Although the artist dated this painting '84, it depicts a nostalgic view of the port of Saint-Malo in Western France's, Brittany in 1884 judging by the clothing worn by the characters depicted. The crowd on the shoreline is watching a sailboat regatta starting just inside the port's breakwater. A rather rare sunny day in Brittany brought out the parasols of the sitting ladies on the edge of the old ramparts. The walled city...

Notre Dame de Paris II
By Lucien Génin
Located in London, GB
'Notre Dame de Paris II', gouache on paper, by Lucien Génin (circa 1930s). One of two paintings of Notre Dame by this artist held by our gallery, it is also an absolutely charming and now, historic depiction from the 1930s, of the most famous cathedral in France. This version uses more exaggerated brushstrokes with strong colours attesting to its expressionist roots. Notre Dame is one of the most widely recognised symbols of the city of Paris and the French nation. As the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris, Notre-Dame contains the cathedra of the Archbishop of Paris. Approximately 12 million people visit Notre-Dame annually, making it the most visited monument in the city. While undergoing renovation and restoration, the roof of Notre-Dame caught fire on the evening of 15 April 2019. Burning for around 15 hours, the cathedral sustained serious damage. The government of France hopes the reconstruction can be completed by Spring 2024, in time for the opening of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Unlike the actual cathedral, this artwork is in good condition, is newly framed and glazed and signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner. Upon request a video may be provided.
About the Artist: After the devastation of the First World War, Lucien Génin (1894 - 1953) left his provincial home in the autumn of 1919 to find his fortune among the lively Parisians in the heart of Montmartre. Génin befriended the painters Frank Will, Gen Paul, Émile Boyer, Marcel Leprin...

Sailors in the Port of Nice
By Alfred Salvignol
Located in London, GB
'Sailors in the Port of Nice', mixed media - gouache, pastel and oil on paper, by Alfred Salvignol (circa 1950s). The Port of Nice is one of the key hubs of Nice and, in fact, of the entire French Riviera, standing out as one of the main harbours for the boats which sail across the Mediterranean Sea. It accommodates both the ships operated by ferry companies and the private yachts of visitors who come to Nice by sea. The artist here depicts a group of crusty sailors watching...
