About the Item

This superb, large and vibrant Modern British figurative landscape oil painting is by noted Slade School artist Franklin White. Painted circa 1920 it was exhibited at the New England Art Club and has a label verso. It is a masterpiece of inter war Breugal Britishness. The setting is a village auction and the painting is packed with numerous people, the ladies in their colourful finery, watching the entertainment, some from their carts. Cattle are in the ring and more animals seem to be escaping from the barn. Children climb the hay stacks behind the scene and the landscape disappears into the distance viewed between big fir trees. It looks like organised chaos but everyone is having fun. The painting is very vibrant and full of energy and light. This is a magnificent twenties Breugal-esque figurative landscape and an excellent example of Franklin White's work. Provenance. Exhibited New England Art Club. Condition. Oil on canvas, 48 inches by 40 inches unframed and in good condition. Housed in its original gallery frame, 53 by 45 inches framed and in good condition. Franklin White (1892-1975) came to this country from Australia in 1913 and two years later entered the Slade School as a student. He worked at the Admiralty making drawings in the Airship department during the First World War. In 1919 he re-entered the Slade and was shortly invited by Professor Tonks to join the teaching staff where he remained until he retired in 1957. On his retirement he turned his full attention to the Samuel Palmer School of Art, which had been operating at his home in Shoreham since 1924 when he first held summer classes in landscape painting for his Slade students. He exhibited at the London Group, Agnews, The Redfern, The New English of the 1920s, and his work is held in permanent collections such as H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's collection, The British Museum, The Victoria and Albert, The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, The Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery, The Laing Gallery, Newcastle, and The National Gallery of Australia, Melbourne. Also held in private collections of Dr Mary Woodall C.B.E., Mrs Thelma Cazalet-Keir C.B.E., Leonard Duke C.B.E., Noel Coward, amongst many others.

Villagers in a Landscape - Flemish 17thC art figurative landscape oil painting
Located in London, GB
This fantastic Flemish 17th century Old Master oil painting is by Thomas Van Apshoven. It was painted circa 1650 and depicts a village with figures outside a tavern, eating, drinking and dancing. Beyond are more dwellings, villagers and animals, all under a blue summer's sky. The detail, brushwork and vibrant colouring are superb. This is an excellent example of Apshoven's work and a typical subject he loved to paint. Provenance. Leominster estate. Wax stamp verso. Condition. Oil on panel, 22 inches by 17 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed In beautiful gilt frame, 30 inches by 25 inches and in good condition. Thomas van Apshoven (1622– 1664) was a Flemish painter known for his landscapes with peasant scenes and genre scenes in interiors. His genre scenes depict village festivals, the interiors of taverns, village scenes or landscapes with peasants engaged in various activities, singeries, guardroom scenes and laboratories of alchemists. Some still lifes have also been attributed to him. His themes and style are close to that of David Teniers the Younger. He was born on 30 November 1622 in Antwerp as the eldest son of Ferdinand van Apshoven the Elder and Leonora Wijns. His father was a painter who had studied with Adam van Noort and had become a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1596. No paintings by his father are known. His younger brother Ferdinand van Apshoven the Younger became also a successful painter. Thomas studied under his father. Some sources state that he became a pupil of the prominent genre painter David Teniers the Younger. It is more likely, however, that he was an imitator of Teniers. He was registered as a 'wijnmeester' [son of a master] in the Guild of St. Luke of Antwerp in the guild year 1645–1646. He married Barbara Janssens on 22 March 1645. The couple had four children. The godfathers of the children included the painters Victor Wolfvoet...

He never married and lived for many years with his father, brother and his family at Vernon Street, Nottingham. Around 1867, he moved to Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire where he exhibited locally. He would also often travel around the British countryside and coast to paint. He spent a few years in West Yorkshire but by 1871 had moved back to live with his family in Nottingham. However, he spent his final years living at Trebray Lodge, Tintagel, Cornwall where he died on 7 February 1886. A number of his works are held by the Buxton Museum, Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council, Nottingham Art Gallery and the Williamson Art Gallery.
