Franklin White
Summer Fair - British art twenties Slade School oil painting village landscape

circa 1920

About the Item

This beautiful, large British figurative landscape oil painting is by noted Slade School artist Franklin White. Painted circa 1920, the composition is of a large number of villagers preparing for a summer fayre. The women, in their colourful skirts and aprons, are making and arranging garlands while the men unload sacks from carts. The children play in the foreground. This activity all takes place under wispy impressionistic trees giving an almost magical feel. This a lovely figurative landscape oil painting and an excellent example of Franklin White's work. Provenance. Suffolk Estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, 40 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition. Housed in a gallery frame 46 inches by 28 inches framed and in good condition. Frankin White (1892-1975) came to this country from Australia in 1913 and two years later entered the Slade School as a student. He worked at the Admiralty making drawings in the Airship department during the First World War. In 1919 he re-entered the Slade and was shortly invited by Professor Tonks to join the teaching staff where he remained until he retired in 1957. On his retirement he turned his full attention to the Samuel Palmer School of Art, which had been operating at his home in Shoreham since 1924 when he first held summer classes in landscape painting for his Slade students. He exhibited at the London Group, Agnews, The Redfern, The New English of the 1920s and his work is held in permanent collections such as H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's collection, The British Museum, The Victoria and Albert, The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, The Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery, The Laing Gallery, Newcastle, and The National Gallery of Australia, Melbourne. His work is also held in private collections of Dr Mary Woodall C.B.E., Mrs Thelma Cazalet-Keir C.B.E., Leonard Duke C.B.E., Noel Coward, amongst many others.

  • Fountains at Pernes Les Fountaines France Impressionist landscape oil painting
    By Sylvia Gosse
    Located in London, GB
Do you like fountains? Sylvia Gosse certainly did, as the location of this painting is the French town of Pernes Les Fountaines in Provence. The little town has 40 or more fountains, big and small, all serviced by the river Nesque. Gosse was a Camden Town/Sickert School artist and painted this painting circa 1912. It depicts a nocturnal landscape scene with three fountains. The fountains are beautifully illuminated with coloured lights and a large crowd on the banks of the water seem to have gathered to watch this spectacle, some having brought their own chairs. The coloured lights cast beautiful tones of pinky red on to the on lookers. Across the water and beyond a tree covered hill stands an impressive columned building. The vibrant colouring, impasto and brushwork are all superb. This is an excellent example of Gosse's work and Sickert's influence as her mentor and life long freind are evident. Signed lower left and also signed and titled verso. Provenance. Private collection of Camden Town Group...
