Gaston Bussiere (French, 1862 – 1928) The sprite of summer Oil on canvas Signed ‘Gaston Bussiere’ (lower left) 25.1/2 x 21.1/4 in. (64.8 x 54 cm.) In a carved gilt frame with gilded detail and intentionally stressed painted sections with a grey and white slip. Gaston Bussière, a distinguished French Symbolist painter and illustrator, commenced his artistic journey by studying at l'Académie des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. Subsequently, he further honed his skills at the école des beaux-arts de Paris, where he received guidance from renowned artists such as Alexandre Cabanel and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. In 1884, Bussière's talents were recognized when he was awarded the prestigious Marie Bashkirtseff prize. Throughout his career, Bussière maintained a close association with Gustave Moreau and drew inspiration from diverse sources, including the theatrical works of Berlioz (particularly "La Damnation de Faust"), the writings of William Shakespeare and Richard Wagner. His proficiency as an illustrator gained him widespread acclaim, leading to collaborations with prominent authors. Notable among his illustrated works are Honoré de Balzac's "Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes" (1897), Théophile Gautier's "Émaux et camées," and Oscar Wilde's "Salomé." Additionally, Bussière contributed illustrations to several works by Gustave Flaubert. As an associate of Joséphin Péladan, the founder of the Rose-Croix esthétique movement, Bussière showcased his artistic creations at the Salon de la Rose-Croix over two consecutive years. His participation in this influential salon further solidified his standing in the artistic community. A significant collection of Gaston Bussière's works is currently on display at the Musée des Ursulines in Mâcon, offering viewers a glimpse into the profound and captivating world created by this gifted Symbolist artist.
