About the Item

Henry John Yeend King (1855-1924) was a landscape and rustic genre painter. He began his artistic career by working for three years in glass works. King went on to study painting under William Bromley in London, and also with Bonnat and Cormon in Paris. He exhibited from 1874 to 1924 at The Royal Academy and The New Watercolour Society. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1879, the Royal Institute in 1886, later becoming Vice President. He was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. In 1898 his picture 'Milking Time' was purchased by the Tate Gallery in London. Yeend King was a fine late-Victorian oil painter of rustic genre, but his robust plein air technique and use of bold colors reflect his Paris training. His works can be found in The Tate Gallery, London and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool as well as galleries in Reading, Rochdale and Sheffield.
