About the Item
This very well executed landscape scene (one of a pair) is by the early 20th century English artist George Hider. These paintings, which can be found in their original swept gilt frames, both feature a cottage set on a track with chickens by the gate and open countryside beyond. They are signed Geo. Hider, one bottom right and the other bottom left.
George Hider is thought to be the son of the prolific English painter Frank Hider, (1861-1933). Frank married Laura Ann Hill in 1885 and they had eight children, 6 of whom survived into adulthood. They had two sons, Frank Jr., who was killed in WWI and Christopher George, who was an art student in 1911. He also had a daughter Mabel C., who was listed in the Census of 1911 as an artist working on her own account from home. As there are similar styles of painting to Frank Hider on the market signed Geo. Hider or G. Hider and M.C. Hider they are sometimes listed as synonyms for Frank Hider but could also be by his children.
