About the Item

Boxing Gloves is a portrait of retired boxer Alex Saucedo by Honora Jacob. Alex Saucedo now operates a boxing training facility in after retiring from a professional career in boxing.. Alex Saucedo's professional boxing career ended so suddenly, he didn't even know it until 10 rounds, a loss by unanimous decision and a hospital visit later. Five years ago, the Oklahoma City boxer faced off with Arnold Barboza Jr. in Las Vegas for a shot at the World Boxing Organization (WBO) World Title. After the disappointing loss, the OKC junior welterweight suffered severe headaches that sent him to a Vegas hospital, where he was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma, a life-threatening condition in which blood builds up on the surface of the brain. Doctors determined that the traumatic brain injury was caused by an accidental headbutt that happened in the opening seconds of the 10-round fight. They also declared that Saucedo, then 26, would never be able to fight again, suddenly ending his pro career with a 30-2 record, including 19 knockouts — and leaving the Mexican-American "boxing prodigy" nicknamed "El Cholo" wondering what to do with the fighter still living inside him.. The one-time contender's struggle to redefine his identity, find new purpose and take care of his family after the unexpected end of his boxing career is the focus of the new documentary "Saucedo," directed and filmed by Emmett Berg. New film 'Saucedo,' about a former OKC professional boxer, steps into the ring at Netflix "I hope that people are inspired. I hope that people leave (the film) with some kind of fondness for Alex and his family, and that people enjoy it," Berg told The Oklahoman. "(My hope) was to help shed light on the difficult pivot that all athletes have to do at one point or another in their careers ... and show what it's like for someone to put a dream away and move on and learn to close one chapter and really be given another in their life." Honora Jacob is known for her historical figures and works behind plexiglass. Other works by Honora Jacob can be seen on 1stdibs .Painting is gallery wrapped. BIO Honora Jacob received her first Bachelors Degree in Communication Arts from the University of Texas to pursue a career as an advertising art director. Twenty years later, a move to Kentucky provided her with time to reflect on her life path. She then turned her attention to a career change following her first passion, painting, and returned to university to receive her second Bachelors Degree, a B.F.A. in Studio Arts. After which, she attended the Masters of Fine Arts program at the University of Kentucky. A return to Texas in 2003, initiated a period of dividing her time between the U.S. and the U.K., where the experience of living as a non-native provided inspiration for her early narrative works. Fast forward to 2018, Ms. Jacob relocated to Kentucky once again, where she currently resides full-time.

Miao Girl, South China Mountains, Ethnic, Oil Painting , Figurative
Located in Houston, TX
Miao Girl depicts a young Miao girl in her native costume. This was painted from a trip to China. The Miao are a group of linguistically-related peoples living in Southern China and Southeast Asia, which are recognized by the government of China as one of the 56 official ethnic groups. The Miao live primarily in southern China's mountains, in the provinces of Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Guangdong, and Hainan. Some sub-groups of the Miao, most notably the Hmong people, have migrated out of China into Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand) Miao women demonstrate great skill and artistry when making traditional clothing and handicrafts. They excel at embroidering, weaving, paper-cutting, batik, and intricate jewelry casting. From vests, coats, hats, collars and cuffs, to full skirts, and baby carriers, the patterns on their clothes are extremely complicated and colorful with clean lines. Girls of around seven will learn embroidering from mothers and sisters, and by the time they are teenagers, they are quite deft. Additionally, Miao silver jewelry...

"The Artist's Wife at the Loom, " Harry Hoffman, Bright American Impressionism
By Harry Leslie Hoffman
Located in New York, NY
Harry Leslie Hoffman (1871 - 1964) The Artist's Wife (Beatrice Pope) at the Loom, circa 1915 Oil on canvas 30 x 32 inches Housed in a period Newcomb-Macklin frame Provenance: Estate of the artist Private Collection, Massachusetts This painting depicts the artist's wife at the loom, producing textile versions of Hoffman's underwater paintings. The screen shown behind Bea is an underwater scene also painted by Hoffman. The study of this painting is held in the collection of the Wolfsonian Museum in Florida. Harry Leslie Hoffman was born in Cressona, a small community in Pennsylvania's Schuylkill Valley. His mother was an amateur artist who encouraged her son to pursue a career in the arts. In 1893, Hoffman entered the School of Art at Yale University and studied with John Ferguson Weir, the son of Robert Walter Weir. After graduation in 1897, Hoffman moved to New York to continue his studies at the Art Students League. He also traveled to Paris and took classes at the Académie Julien. In the summer of 1902, Hoffman attended the Lyme Summer School of Art, in the town of Old Lyme on the Connecticut coast. The school was headed by Frank Vincent Dumond and was located in a boarding house owned by Florence Griswold. The school eventually grew into an artists' colony and a center for American Impressionism. When Hoffman first arrived as a student, he was not permitted to stay in the house which was designated for the professional artists only. However, his outgoing personality soon won him many friends at the colony. In 1905, Hoffman settled in Old Lyme and worked as a full member of the artist colony. He was particularly influenced by Willard Leroy Metcalf, an Impressionist also working in Old Lyme. Fellow artists later fondly recalled Hoffman's antics at the Griswold house, which included playing the flute and banjo, tap-dancing, singing humorous songs, and performing magic tricks. In 1910 Hoffman...
