About the Item

Lorenzo Gramiccia (1702–1795) – 18th-Century Interior Scene Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: Framed: 56 x 68 cm Flat: 50 x 59 cm Signature: Present Backside: Inscription with 2 stamps Description and Historical Context This elegant and detailed interior scene is attributed to Lorenzo Gramiccia, an 18th-century Italian painter known for his depictions of intimate domestic moments and social interactions in aristocratic settings. His work follows in the tradition of Venetian and Roman genre painting, focusing on narrative-rich depictions of daily life, often infused with humor, subtle social commentary, and theatrical composition. The painting presents an opulent noble household, where a group of well-dressed figures engage in a domestic ritual or social exchange. At the center, a woman holding a child is surrounded by elegantly dressed gentlemen and a servant, possibly hinting at a christening, family reunion, or financial negotiation. The seated nobleman on the left, dressed in flowing robes, gestures toward a document, suggesting a legal or ceremonial element. The richly adorned room, framed by classical portraits on the walls, further establishes the aristocratic setting. Gramiccia’s painterly style blends realism with a lighthearted touch, reflecting the Rococo influence that flourished in 18th-century Italian painting. His compositions are characterized by fine detailing in textiles, expressive character interactions, and a refined yet dynamic use of lighting. His works often draw comparisons to Pietro Longhi’s Venetian interiors and Giovanni Paolo Pannini’s Roman scenes, capturing the elegance, leisure, and customs of the period. Significance and Collectibility This painting is a rare and museum-worthy example of 18th-century Italian genre painting, offering a glimpse into aristocratic life with exceptional detail and narrative depth. It is an ideal acquisition for collectors of historical European interiors, Rococo-period art, and Italian genre paintings. "Flemish genre tavern scene"
Located in Edinburgh, GB
Unidentified Artist 17th-Century Tavern Scene Oil on canvas Framed: 113 x 103 cm Canvas: 96 x 91 cm This 17th-century oil painting captures a lively tavern scene, a popular subject in Dutch and Flemish genre painting of the Golden Age. The composition is rich in character and storytelling, depicting a group of men engaged in a card game, with coins, letters, and drinks scattered across the table. A standing woman, possibly a barmaid or concerned onlooker, leans in, while a man enters from the left, holding his hat and appearing amused by the game. In the foreground, a small child tends to a jug and tankard, adding a touch of humor and domestic realism. Executed in oil on canvas, the painting showcases earthy, warm tones and rich chiaroscuro, emphasizing the candlelit glow of the scene. The artist masterfully captures the textures of fabrics, wood, and metal, giving depth and dimension to the environment. The expressive faces and animated gestures highlight the social interactions typical of Dutch and Flemish tavern paintings...

An auction at Drouot's in Paris.
By René Francois Xavier Prinet
Located in Paris, FR
An auction at Drouot's in Paris. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Around 1900-1910. René François Xavier Prinet (31 December 1861, Vitry-le-François – 26 January 1946, Bourbonne-les-Bains) was a French painter and illustrator who drew his subjects from middle-class society. He was born to Henri Prinet, an Imperial Prosecutor in Vitry-le-François. A promotion led to him being posted in Paris, where they lived in a home not far from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. His father painted as a hobby and was supportive of his desire to study art, having him seek the advice of Louis Charles Timbal [fr], a well-known church painter and friend of the family. Around 1880, he began his studies in earnest, in the studios of Jean-Léon Gérôme; remaining with him until 1885. That year, his painting "The Infant Jesus" was accepted for display at the Salon. This was followed by studies at the Académie Julian. At this time, he also became associated with a group of young artists known as the Bande Noire (Black Stripe), which included Lucien Simon, André Dauchez...
