About the Item

Born in Baku, Russia in 1899, prolific avant-garde artist and painter Nahum Tschacbasov studied in Paris with Leopold Gottlieb, Marcel Gromaire and Fernand Léger. In 1935, Tschacbasov moved to New York City, where he dominated the art world from the 1930s through the 1950s. Tschacbasov was one of the co-founders of the Ten Dissenters, a group of young artists including Mark Rothko, Joseph Solman, Ilya Bolotowsky and Leopold Gottlieb, among others, protesting an art establishment they considered conservative in favor of individuality, abstraction and expressionism. Tschacbasov exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Art Institute of Chicago, Corcoran Gallery, Knox-Albright Museum and ACA and Perls Galleries in New York, among others. The National Arts Club hosted a retrospective exhibit of more than fifty of his paintings in 2013. Tschacbasov's works are held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, Jewish Museum and Walker Art Center, among others.

Two donkeys grazing and a young man seated by them are bathed in light at day's end. The artist, Thomas Barker (known as 'Barker of Bath'), was a British painter of landscape and rural life. Born in 1769, at Trosnant near the village of Pontypool, in Monmouthshire, Barker showed a talent for drawing figures and designing landscapes at an early age although he was entirely self-taught. When he was sixteen his family moved to Bath where the patronage of a coach-builder named Charles Spackman allowed him to continue working as an artist. During the first four years he copied the works of the old Dutch and Flemish masters. Barker exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. In 1925, he joined the Zionist movement "Mizrachi" and in 1936 immigrated to Palestine where he opened a poultry shop in Haifa. Driven by a need to memorialize his family and their shtetl community lost in the Holocaust, he drew scenes of traditional Jewish life. Unfamiliar with the conventions of scale and perspective, he set his heavily outlined frontal figures on steeply rising surfaces and often portrayed his father in monumental size to mark his importance. One of Israel's greatest naive-style painters. Along with Shalom of Safed, Kopel Gurwin and Gabriel Cohen, He is renowned as one of Israel's greatest living naive-style folk art painters, The Haifa Museum of Art will be opening the first ever Outsider Art exhibition (also known as Art Brut) in Israel in January 2013.
