Paul Emile Léon Perboyre
Military WW1 oil painting of French Cavalry & German Infantry Soldiers

1916

About the Item

Paul-Emile Perboyre French, (1851-1929) The Surrender Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1916 Image size: 20.5 inches x 25 inches Size including frame: 26.25 inches x 30.75 inches A well observed military painting of WW1 French cavalrymen and German infantry soldiers by Paul-Emile Perboyre. A group of German foot soldiers can be seen surrounded by French cavalry outside a town building. The infantry leader is shown saluting the ‘chef de escadron’ of the cavalry, indicating his surrender to the French soldiers. Perboyre painted this in 1916 at the height of World War I and may well have been intended the work to boost morale and public support for the French army. The work could well be depicting the surrendering of German forces at Verdun during the same year. Paul-Emile Leon Perboyre was born at Horbourg near Colmar in the Alsace region of France. He came from a military family with his father being the commander of an artillery regiment, which undoubtedly had an influence in his subject matter when he became an artist. He left his home town to study in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he was tutored by Leon Bonnat (1833-1922), a leading portraitist of the day. Perboyre began exhibiting at the Paris Salon from 1881 and quickly built up a reputation for military paintings. At the time of his marriage to Caroline Julie Adele Fouquet on 27 March, 1884 he was living at 11, Impasse des Belles-Feuilles. He continued exhibiting at the Paris Salon and in 1908 received an honourable mention. In 1909, became a member of the Society of French Artists. As well as exhibiting in France, he also exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in London and the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art. By 1910, Perboyre had moved to 57, Rue Letort, where he remained for the rest of his life. Much of his early work consisted of battle scenes and episodes from the Napoleonic and Franco-Prussian wars. However later in his life he painted scenes from the First World War, such as this fine example. He died at his home at 57 Rue Letort on 31 March, 1929. An example of his work can be found at the Paisley Museum. Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. ©Benton Fine Art

Women walking by stop to listen, a man carrying a sack has stopped to watch the rider, people are in the Inn doorway, and one is looking out the window. Children pause their playing. The scene is under a large tree beside the Inn; a whole community waiting for news. There is a great deal of detail in the scene, tree and Inn house...

Well painted English Victorian scene of two boats in a battle at night time, off the coast of England. Though signed little is known about the painter. The piece is typically English in its style and the scene looks like the coast of the South of England.
