About the Item
Realistic, richly colorful oil painting of New York City edifice by Richard Britell
oil on wood panel
10 x 8 inches
Framed, hangs flush to the wall
Signed on lower right
In Richard Britell's close crops of edifices, the artist directs our attention to exquisite architectural details that we take for granted in daily life. "Madison Street" isolates the side of a New York City building whose exterior comprises an array of textures and patterns — the ideal subject for Britell to display his preternatural powers of rendition. Elements of abstraction apply to this canvas — namely the foregrounding of shape, texture, and line over subject — while at the same time, Britell's capabilities as a realistic painter are on full display. It is only the subdued color palette of this painting, with subtle modulations of a sandy brown, that calls to mind the "everyday-ness" of Britell's metropolitan muse.
About the artist:
Richard Britell, a career painter, studied at Pratt Institute with Philip Pearlstein and Walter Erlebacher. His first show in NYC at Staempfli Gallery was sold out, and reviewed in the New York Times. Britell’s new works revolve around large, dreamy cityscapes tending toward abstraction. The artist currently lives in Pittsfield, MA.
Richard Britell is a painter, curator, teacher, and writer. The reach of his creativity and intuition can be hard to pigeonhole. Paintings of architectural details on small panels isolate areas of geometric interest found within greater structures. Within this cropped view, Britell establishes peaceful, albeit rhythmic, patterns of stacked bricks and wall relief embellishments that represent a kind of ordered permanence. The artist studied at Pratt Institute and has shown with the gallery for many years. He lives in Pittsfield, MA.

Photo-realist oil painting of a classic brick building exterior in New York City
28 x 50 inches, oil on canvas painting
Wire backing for easy hanging
Unframed with white painted sides
This contemporary, realistic oil painting of a New York City brick building exterior was painted by Richard Britell in 2019. Employing his mastery of the troupe l'oeil technique, Britell paints the smooth red colored stone building in extreme detail assuming a three-dimensional quality with close attention paid to shadow and perspective. This building is reminiscent of neo-classical architecture, popularized in the mid-late 1800's and the striking red exterior contrasts against the white stone window trim, further accentuating the painting's troupe l'oeil qualities. The painting on canvas is complete with wire on reverse for seamless hanging.
