Roland Jarvis was a painter and printmaker, born to a French mother and English father, whose early education was in France. He studied at Guildford Technical College, 1945-48, before gaining a place at King's College, London, 1948-51 where he read electrical engineering. Following his National Service, 1951-53, he worked in research engineering. He decided to study art and attended Chelsea School of Art, 1954-56, where his tutors included Ceri Richards and Robert Medley. Awarded a French government scholarship in 1956 he spent three years in Paris, furthering his knowledge at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
