About the Item
Shan Fannin’s “Nostalgic (Hakosuka)” is a 2025 acrylic painting on panel measuring 42 x 30 inches (depth 1 inch), offered unframed but ready to hang. This hyper-realistic work celebrates the iconic Nissan Skyline GT-R—specifically the early-generation model affectionately known as the “Hakosuka.”
Fannin based this piece on her own reference photos taken at a car show in Los Angeles in 2019. Despite the original gray weather and low contrast, she transformed the composition with vibrant, painterly flair. Mount Fuji rises in the distance, symbolizing the car’s Japanese origins. The artist’s distinctive technique blends realism with subtle abstraction: areas such as the windshield, asphalt, and background were painted with her fingers to create expressive surface effects.
The gleaming front end of the vehicle is rendered with technical precision, capturing the dual headlamps, signature GT-R badge, and nostalgic Japanese decal in crisp detail. Chrome and glass elements reflect the surrounding light, while the background situates the subject on a rural road beneath blue skies.
This car, rarely seen in the U.S., holds global reverence among collectors and enthusiasts. It was nicknamed “Godzilla” after outperforming competitors in Australia, and its legacy remains strong. Fannin’s portrait pays homage to both mechanical beauty and cultural context, making it a compelling statement piece for automotive collectors and contemporary art lovers alike.

Shan Fannin
Shannon "Shan" Fannin (b. 1969) specializes in contemporary vehicle portraiture, creating dynamic acrylic compositions that capture both mechanical precision and emotional resonance. A California native who initially trained in special education art instruction, Fannin spent 25 years in marketing and business before returning to artistic practice in her forties. Her automotive focus developed organically through participation in classic car culture, leading to professional recognition within a year of resuming her art career. Fannin works exclusively in acrylics, often on canvases measuring up to six feet in length. Her technique combines detailed brushwork with gestural hand-painting, creating textured surfaces that emphasize reflection and movement. The artist travels internationally to photograph subjects and interview owners, incorporating these personal narratives into works that explore vehicles as symbols of aspiration and identity. Her paintings have garnered awards at national and international exhibitions and have been featured in automotive and fine art publications worldwide. Collections include works held across three continents. Based in Austin, Texas, Fannin is represented by select galleries across the United States including Abend Gallery.

Yangchareon came to Los Angeles, California from Lampang, Thailand, Southeast Asia where he studied Fine Arts at the Arts & Crafts College (Poh Chang), Bangkok, Thailand and Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. In California he continued his studies at Woodbury University, receiving a degree in Advertising Design. He is a contemporary figurative realist artist. He painted the urban landscape of California, which have been exhibited in solo and group shows. His work is represented by prominent galleries nationally. Yangchareon spent much of his childhood at his father’s movie theater where he became fascinated with the world of American Westerns. The nostalgia for this idyllic film Americana can be garnered through his subject matter. Abandoned theaters, factories and businesses of an almost extinct era of architecture are carefully rendered in the soft morning light. Working from his own photography, shot during the early hours of the day, Yangchareon’s acrylic and oil paintings are largely devoid of human figures, but deeply imbued with their past presence. Recently, the artist has broadened his focus to include imagery of the city at night––rendering glistening rain-soaked sidewalks bathed in the artificial light of street lamps and movie marquees against an inky black sky. Yet, Yangchareon’s motivation remains the same; to find the hidden beauty in varying industrial landscapes and seeing splendor where most would argue it does not exist. Reminiscent of Edward Hopper, a sense of melancholy pervades his compositions in a quiet, detached manner. The influence of Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud can also be detected in the artist’s sense of color and in his interpretation of light. Moody LA auto culture artwork dealing with themes of isolation and alienation.
