Photorealist Still-life Paintings

PHOTOREALISM

A direct challenge to Abstract Expressionism’s subjectivity and gestural vigor, Photorealism was informed by the Pop predilection for representational imagery, popular iconography and tools, like projectors and airbrushes, borrowed from the worlds of commercial art and design.

Whether gritty or gleaming, the subject matter favored by Photorealists is instantly, if vaguely, familiar. It’s the stuff of yellowing snapshots and fugitive memories. The bland and the garish alike flicker between crystal-clear reality and dreamy illusion, inviting the viewer to contemplate a single moment rather than igniting a story.

The virtues of the “photo” in Photorealist art — infused as they are with dazzling qualities that are easily blurred in reproduction — are as elusive as they are allusive. “Much Photorealist painting has the vacuity of proportion and intent of an idiot-savant, long on look and short on personal timbre,” John Arthur wrote (rather admiringly) in the catalogue essay for Realism/Photorealism, a 1980 exhibition at the Philbrook Museum of Art, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At its best, Photorealism is a perpetually paused tug-of-war between the sacred and the profane, the general and the specific, the record and the object.

Robert Bechtle invented Photorealism, in 1963,” says veteran art dealer Louis Meisel. “He took a picture of himself in the mirror with the car outside and then painted it. That was the first one.”

The meaning of the term, which began for Meisel as “a superficial way of defining and promoting a group of painters,” evolved with time, and the core group of Photorealists slowly expanded to include younger artists who traded Rolleiflexes for 60-megapixel cameras, using advanced digital technology to create paintings that transcend the detail of conventional photographs.

On 1stDibs, the collection of Photorealist art includes work by Richard Estes, Ralph Goings, Chuck Close, Audrey Flack, Charles Bell and others.

Copper Vase, Roses and Red Grapes - original realism painting - contemporary Art
Located in London, Chelsea
In Copper Vase, Roses and Red Grapes, Rebecca Ritchie showcases her exceptional skill in still life realism. The painting centers around a gleaming copper vase, which reflects the light in subtle, warm tones that enhance the rich textures of its surroundings. The vase is adorned with delicate white roses, whose soft petals contrast beautifully with the bold, crimson foliage beside them. The harmonious arrangement of the flowers invites the viewer to appreciate the juxtaposition between the gentle, organic forms and the solid, reflective nature of the vase. Ritchie’s attention to detail is remarkable, particularly in her depiction of the red grapes scattered at the base of the vase. Each grape is meticulously rendered with a realistic sheen, bringing a lifelike quality to the composition. The dark background further enhances the vibrancy of the objects, creating an intimate atmosphere where light and shadow play delicately over the scene. The artist’s skillful manipulation of light and contrast brings a timeless elegance to the work. This masterful still life, Copper Vase, Roses and Red Grapes, is available for acquisition at Signet Contemporary Art in Chelsea, as well as online. Art collectors now have the opportunity to bring this beautiful and evocative piece into their collection, a celebration of light, texture, and everyday beauty. Artist Biography: Rebecca is a still life artist based in Tunbridge Wells, whose practice approaches subject matter with a classical technical style. Having attended Maidstone school of art Rebecca went on to enjoy a successful career in Television Set design. Rebecca began making a body of work as a full time artist in 2015 and is currently based in Langton Green where she produces artwork from her own studio. Rebecca also enjoys painting portraits and won the 2018 ‘The Artist’s People’s Choice Award’ with the Artist and Leisure painter magazines for her Portrait ‘Colin’. The artist has featured in Galleries and Exhibitions all over the UK including with the Society of Women Artists in London. Inspired by the Dutch masters, in both technique and lighting, she uses many glazed layers and favours ‘Chiaroscuro’ lighting with bold contrasts between dark and light. Working exclusively in oils, her props cupboard is brimming with hoarded silverware, glass, and china teacups which she uses to great effect in her work, capturing reflections and tranquility in the rendering of light as it passes through the translucent skin of fruit or glass, and porcelain. “My compositions are constructed in my mind’s eye before I begin hunting for my props and I am very much drawn to a combination of items that create an appealing scene or give a sense of nostalgia. I spend as long as I can on the composition and use a digital camera to help work out the best composition. I spend hours rooting around on ebay, antique shops – and sometimes even friends’ houses for things that I’m specifically looking for. I’ve built up quite a collection of pottery, glass and old silverware...

Red Apples - original realism still life painting - contemporary Art
Located in London, Chelsea
"Red Apples" by Heidi Von Faber presents a striking still life, where simplicity meets refined realism, creating a deeply evocative image of the autumn harvest. This original painting, executed in acrylics on linen, features a glass bottle filled with apple cider, its golden hue softly glowing in the light. Surrounding the bottle, a group of rich red apples is carefully arranged, their skins glistening with natural sheen. Each apple is painted with meticulous attention to detail, capturing the subtle play of light and shadow across their surfaces. A single apple, placed in the foreground, draws the viewer’s eye into the scene, while the others rest in a dark crate that anchors the composition against the black backdrop. The warm light accentuates the earthy reds and soft yellows, creating a beautiful contrast against the velvety black background. The rustic wooden table on which the apples rest further enhances the autumnal feel of the piece, grounding it in a setting that evokes both simplicity and elegance. Von Faber’s skill in hyperrealism shines in the careful rendering of textures, from the smooth glass of the bottle to the crisp skin of the apples. This captivating still life is framed and signed, making it an inviting addition to any space. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, “Red Apples” is available for acquisition at Signet Contemporary Art in Chelsea and online, offering a timeless celebration of nature captured in acrylics on linen. Colorite Spice Rack -- Original Oil Painting -- Please watch attached video
Located in Boca Raton, FL
This painting would look amazing in a modern kitchen. Please see accompanying video. One cannot appreciate this painting on a computer screen; in real life, it is absolutely amazing. Because you cannot appreciate it on a computer screen, our gallery has a unique policy. When purchasing from us, the buyer has sixty days to determine if they want to keep the artwork. If not, the buyer returns to piece to us for full refund, and we pay the shipping both ways! A collector should consider several factors when deciding from whom to purchase artwork online. Check the location of the seller. When one buys from a foreign seller, one also has to consider the problems of getting the piece through Customs. There are often delays and considerable fees to pay in order to import the item. When purchasing from us, we ship the same day and you receive it via FedEx the next day, no problems or hassles. When one purchases from an auction house, one pays a buyer’s premium of anywhere from 23% to 28% over the “hammer price”. So when one “wins” an auction for $20,000, the actual price paid is more like $25,000. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price agreed to is the price paid by the buyer, no hidden fees. Secondly, when one purchases from an auction house, the buyer pays the packing and shipping fee, which are usually exorbitant. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price includes packing and shipping. Thirdly, when one purchases from an auction house, the sale is final. If one receives the piece and is not 100% satisfied with it, there is nothing the buyer can do about it. They are stuck with it. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the buyer has sixty days to determine if they want to keep it. If not, the buyer returns to piece to us for full refund, and we pay the shipping both ways. During his future travels to Europe, Mark’s eye for light and photography merged with his passion for painting at the Jeu de Paume in Paris; which triggered his career in photorealism. Mark is well known for painting objects that people can identify and emotionally connect with. His work is distinctly marked by a rich palette and the luminous range of light he paints into his compositions. Each painting is a true extension of his vision and can take up to 200 hours to complete. Mark Schiff’s work has been commissioned by the well-known brands The Hershey Company and Tropicana. Grapes and Jug - original realism still life painting - contemporary Art
Located in London, Chelsea
"Grapes & Jug" by Heidi Von Faber immerses the viewer in a world of soft light and elegant simplicity, capturing the essence of ripe, fresh grapes in a beautifully realistic composition. In this original still life, painted with acrylics on linen, a glass jug filled with a pale, translucent drink takes center stage. Inside the jug, a few grapes float serenely, their greenish-yellow hue mirrored by the drink itself. To the left of the jug, a small bunch of grapes rests on the rustic wooden surface, their forms subtly highlighted by a gentle light. The accompanying glass on the right, partially filled with the same liquid, completes the serene scene. The light source casts soft, natural highlights on the grapes and the glass surfaces, creating a delicate interplay between light and shadow. The deep black background contrasts dramatically with the light wood table, enhancing the scene's timelessness and purity. Heidi Von Faber’s attention to detail is evident in the precision of the reflections and the transparency of the glass, skillfully capturing the texture of the fruit and the coolness of the drink. Signed and framed, the painting exudes an aura of calm, inviting viewers to appreciate the quiet beauty of everyday objects. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, “Grapes & Jug” is available for acquisition at Signet Contemporary Art in Chelsea and online, offering a timeless celebration of natural simplicity captured in acrylics on linen. Green Apples - original realism still life painting - contemporary Art
Located in London, Chelsea
"Green Apples" by Heidi Von Faber invites viewers into a serene, hyperreal world where the crisp freshness of green apples is brought to life with stunning clarity. This acrylic-on-linen painting features a glass bottle filled with apple cider, its clear surface reflecting the golden liquid inside. The focal point of the scene is a cluster of green apples, carefully arranged behind the bottle in a dark crate, their glossy skins highlighted by the soft, natural lighting. One apple, prominently placed on the table, appears ready to be picked up, emphasizing the tactile realism of the composition. The interplay of light and shadow creates a rich depth, bringing out the vibrant greens and warm golden tones. The contrast of the bright, refreshing hues against the velvety black background emphasizes the crispness of the apples, while the rustic wooden table provides a grounding warmth that balances the cool tones of the fruit and bottle. Von Faber’s mastery of realism is evident in the finely painted details, from the condensation on the bottle to the texture of the apples’ skins, creating a lifelike presence. Signed and elegantly framed, this artwork is a testament to the artist’s skill and precision. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, “Green Apples” is available for acquisition at Signet Contemporary Art in Chelsea and online, offering a timeless celebration of natural beauty captured in acrylics on linen. Kathleen Keifer is a California-based internationally collected artist. Her paintings invite the viewer to consider the complex relationship between time and timelessness. It is the sheer visual interaction between the elements, taken in their bare simplicity that interests her. Water, sky, and architecture change their appearance with the shifts in weather and light. Her broken brushstrokes depict light and color in luminous waves, dissolving form into a shimmering surface of vibrant light. For her, painting captures the very essence of time and its passage. While painting landscapes she became fascinated with isolating the objects in her paintings. She believes that actual sites and places have individual magic. The goal is to take objects from popular culture and paint them in a new context. She began to paint the silhouette of the Life Guard Tower more as a pop art symbol than a landscape element. With a high level of technical virtuosity, Keifer creates a new sense of reality with textures and colors that seem to add lighting effects and distinct shadows, confronting the viewer with new interpretations of familiar objects. Born and raised in Chicago, Kathleen Keifer is a second-generation artist. Her mother, also a fine artist, exposed Keifer to the world of art and supervised her training from a very early age. This legacy continues today as Keifer closely nurtures the development of the artistic leaning in each of her three daughters, inspiring a third generation of female artists. Her works are represented by Artspace Warehouse Los Angeles and have been exhibited and collected internationally, including Chicago, New York, and London. Artspace Warehouse has been representing and exhibiting Kathleen Keifer's original artworks since 2017. The gallery has been a 1stdibs partner since 2014 with consistently excellent reviews from clients worldwide.
