About the Item

Harking back to his roots in this picture Simeon Stafford has captured, in a whirling scene of colourful chaos all the elements that made travelling fairs such magical places for adults and children alike. The fishing boats in the background however, show that there’s no escape from the daily reality despite it’s suspension for the duration of the fairs’ stay in town. A truly atmospheric work from this artist with a great depth of paint. Artist Biography: Simeon Stafford was born in Dukinfield (a small northern town bordering the Pennines) in 1959. As a young artist, his landscapes were similar to the gritty northern landscapes of L.S.Lowry and other northern English artists. At the age of 14, Stafford met L.S Lowry who encouraged him to paint. Simeon moved to Cornwall in 1996, where he met the artists Terry Frost & Patrick Heron. Thus his northern roots fused with the influence of colour & light from Frost & Heron and the magnetism of West Penwith to create an expressionism within his work which is both powerful and alluring. Not concerned with angst and soul searching, in his own words "there is enough of that in the world of news today", Stafford's work is deeply idiosyncratic and reflects a world full of incident and accident, with splashes of vibrant colour and amusing compositions. He charmingly combines reality and imagination, with many of his paintings featuring characters from his family, including Auntie Dot, the little girl who is constantly doing a handstand, Trixie, the family Jack Russell, who lived until she was 28 and is now stuffed and a resident of Simeon?s bedroom and the black seaside donkey. Widely regarded as one of the country's leading living artists, Stafford exhibited at the Royal Academy in 2001 and in 2003 he became a member of The Birmingham Society of Artists. His work can be found in numerous private collections, including those of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and former Prime Minister Tony Blair

Funfair - 1950's French Expressionist Mid Century Oil on Canvas Painting
Located in Sevenoaks, GB
A wonderful 1950's French expressionist oil on canvas depicting figures at a busy funfair, by Parisian artist André Beaucé. Excellent quality work painted with thick impasto brush work. Signed lower centre. Artist: André Beaucé (French, 1911-1974) Title: Funfair Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 25.5 x 21 inches (65 x 54 cm) André Beaucé was a French painter born on May 23, 1911 in Rennes and died on January 2, 1974 in Paris . A pupil of the School of Fine Arts in Rennes, a graduate of the National School of Decorative Arts where he was admitted in 1932, André Beaucé was a pupil in the workshops of André Lhote and Simon, with Yves Brayer . He won the Abd-el-Tif prize in 1946 and was a regular at the Salon d'Automne. After having lived for several years in Algeria, and in particular at Villa Abd El Tif where he was a scholarship holder from 1946 to 1948, André Beaucé returned to France in 1949 and resumed his teaching at the Schools of Paris. His painting is then powerfully expressionist, free from any system. In the 1950s, we notice vigorous, uncompromising, intense portraits, captured in an almost caricatural way. The tones, always very mounted, are opposed with force in a composition cut with vigor. After the dark years of the war, Beaucé’s art reflects a violent vision of a certain reality that is always brutal and yet magnificent. Exhibitions Paris, 1936 to 1945, Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts . Tunis, 1946, Exhibition of French Africa. Algiers, 1947, Abd-el-Tif. Paris, 1948, Letourneur gallery. Carnival Ride, Original Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
A colorful scene of a carnival in Rochester, Minnesota, with two young people strapped into their seats waiting for the ride to start. "I love the tawdry splendor of gaudy carnival attractions," says artist Leroy Burt. "Flashing lights and bright colors. One often sees the most unlikely combinations of people who might never meet except during those moments when they sit next to each other on rides."

About the Artist
Artist Leroy Burt paints playful, offbeat landscapes and portraits based on his experiences living in Milwaukee, New York, Costa Rica, and currently Rochester, Minnesota. "I think of my paintings as short stories," he says. As a young child, Leroy faced a number of obstacles. His parents divorced when he was four years old and he was raised by his grandparents in a three-room shack without running water or electricity. Leroy worked hard to pull himself out of poverty. He studied graphic design and painting, which led to a 30-year career in graphic design - five years at WMVS, the PBS television station in Milwaukee, fifteen years at city hall in Milwaukee, and ten years at WNET, the PBS station in New York. In 2015, Leroy retired to focus his energy on painting. Today, he works from a tiny studio filled with half-finished paintings stacked against every wall. "There are photos and sketches for future paintings taped everywhere," says Leroy. "My windows are filled with orchids. There are books, films and music CDs in every corner. And the room is dominated by a black and silver Andy Warhol silkscreen print of Marilyn Monroe."

Annie's Second-Hand Chic, Original Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
"Just off Brady Street, in Milwaukee’s East Side, there used to be a place with class and style," says artist Leroy Burt. The store was a treasure trove of vintage goodies that were as fun to dig through as to wear. The shop was full of clothing, shoes, jewelry, and bags, some dating back to the golden days of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. The ceiling was pink and covered with toys, trinkets, signs, and other captivating eye candy.
