About the Item

This is one of Stanley's exquisite watercolors of the women he painted: friends, students, family, colleagues, models surrounded by their specific interest, their line of work, their area of expertise. Only upon close inspection can the detail and introspection of the artist in relation to his subject be appreciated. Stanley's work is of the quality that can be enjoyed and lived with forever. These women may be specific, but they are also every woman, strong women, and the care and tenderness with which he has rendered them comes through with great power. Stanley Rosenthal was born and raised in Cleveland, OH, and very proud of it. He then went to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, PA where he earned a BFA, and from there, he went to Detroit, MI to get his MFA from WSU. Other well-known individuals who taught or studied at Wayne State University and are connected with the arts are Arthur Danto, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Susan Aaron-Taylor, Tyree Guyton, Hughie Lee-Smith, Philip Levine, Casey Kasem, Helen Thomas and Sergio DeGusti. He began full-time teaching at WSU in 1969, progressing through the academic ranks to become a full professor in 2006. He was employed by WSU for 46 years and served as a graduate officer for the Department of Art and Art History, member of the Graduate Council, and served on a number of college and university committees. Stanley was a tenacious advocate for the arts, a warm and genuine colleague, and a dedicated teacher. Over the years, he won numerous national and regional awards as a printmaker and a painter, including the top award in Watercolor USA (twice), State of the Art National Watercolor Invitational (twice) and many top awards in the Michigan Water Color Society annual exhibitions. He served as chair of the Michigan Water Color Society, president of the Michigan Association of Printmakers and artist/advisor to the Graphic Arts Council of the Detroit Institute of Arts and served as a juror and speaker at many venues. In 2013, Rosenthal received WSU's prestigious Murray E. Jackson Scholar in the Arts Award. In 2001 he was more thrilled to receive the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching because he loved teaching. He had a big impact on all his students. The highlight of his long career was receiving WSU's prestigious Murray E. Jackson Scholar in the Arts Award in 2013 culminating in a big solo exhibition in Nov. 2014 titled "Memories - the Murray Jackson Award Exhibition and 50 year Retrospective".
