Arike
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Arike" is a powerful artwork created by Fatunmbi Anjolaoluwa Grace that captures the essence of human emotions and experience. The piece is a mixed-media artwork that uses acrylic, and fabrics to create a stunning visual display.
The artwork depicts a young woman gazing off into the distance, lost in thought. Her eyes are expressive, and her expression is contemplative as if she is reflecting on something deeply personal.
The title of the artwork, "Arike," is a Yoruba name that means "someone who we have encountered and chosen to care for." This name is significant because it suggests that the woman in the artwork is someone who has had a profound impact on the artist's life, and the artwork is a tribute to her. The use of traditional African clothing in the artwork is also significant. It speaks to the artist's cultural heritage and identity and adds a layer of meaning to the piece.
Overall, "Arike" is a stunning piece of artwork that captures the complexity and depth of human experience. The use of mixed media, traditional African aesthetics, and the contemplative expression on the woman's face all contribute to making this artwork a powerful visual display. Fatunmbi Anjolaoluwa Grace has created a masterpiece that speaks to the human condition and the importance of connecting with others.

About Artist
Anjolaoluwa Arike Fatunmbi is an artist based in the southwest city of Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria. Her medium of art is expressed in traditional Adire and Ankara fabric with a blend of acrylic on canvas. Her journey into art began at an early stage while watching her father work on various forms of art as a seasoned professional. For, Arike, Art was second nature as she lived and dreamed of art in an environment beaming with top professionals and ardent art enthusiasts.
As she advanced in age with a broader exposure to the vicissitudes of life and a deeper understanding of how human nature transcends and reinvents in a constantly changing circle, her works are consciously impacted by her cultural roots and personal experiences. Arike’s textile art is composed of intricate compositions of layers of fabric, flowery patterns, and detailed attention to the markings of the female features. Her pieces are reflective of her personality as she loves to incorporate vibrant colors and whimsical designs.
With her early start in the Art scene, Arike has been able to apprentice under renowned masters in the Art sector like the globally acclaimed proponent of Contemporary Black Art, Oluwole Omofemi. Her work was selected for the prestigious Art fellowship themed: Telling textile tales. The program sponsored by the British Council had in attendance notable heavyweights like Uzoma Samuel and Laura Jones among other participants. She successfully presented papers on the forms of Art she practice and the ethics guiding her creative enterprise.
She has also been greatly inspired by leading female artists in the likes of Marcellina Akpojotor, Bisa Butler...

Virgin Mary and Child Jesus oil on canvas painting
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Title: Virgin Mary and Child Jesus
Artist: Francisco Ribera Gómez (1907-1990)
Technique: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 31.9 x 25.6 inches (unframed)
Date of creation: 1942
Style: Classical Academicism with Renaissance influences
Description of the Artwork
The painting depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus in a tender and intimate moment. Warm colors, primarily reds, greens, and soft flesh tones, enhance the devotional nature of the scene. The use of golden halos, symbolizing sanctity, along with serene and realistic expressions, directly connects with the Renaissance pictorial tradition.
The style belongs to classical academicism, characterized by a balanced composition, meticulous drawing, and a masterful use of chiaroscuro to give volume and depth to the figures. The detailed rendering of the flesh tones and draperies amplifies the spirituality and solemnity of the piece, evoking the works of great masters such as Raphael and Murillo.
Artist's Biography
Francisco Ribera Gómez (1907-1990) was a prominent 20th-century Spanish painter known for his depictions of religious scenes, female portraits, and costumbrist works. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, Ribera Gómez received numerous accolades and was regarded as one of the great exponents of Spanish academicism. His work combines a rigorous technical foundation with luminous sensitivity and an idealized sense of beauty.
Influences and Comparisons
Francisco Ribera Gómez's work can be compared to other academic and religious artists who share a similar aesthetic:
Bartolomé Esteban Murillo: In the emotional and approachable treatment of religious themes.
William-Adolphe Bouguereau: For the idealization of human figures and technical mastery.
Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio): For harmonious composition and the depiction of the Virgin Mary.
Within the Spanish tradition, his style recalls Eduardo Rosales...

Portrait of a man, a selfportrait ?
oil on paper
17.5 x 12 cm oval
Framed under glass : 43 x 34.5 cm
This rather mysterious portrait is perhaps a self-portrait of the artist who painted it. This is suggested by the three-quarter pose and the gaze fixed on the viewer.
What this man seems to be staring at is himself.
Similarly, the model's appearance is reminiscent of the image of the romantic, bohemian, tortured artist. It's also very interesting that he used a range of dark colours to reinforce this idea of melancholy.
It has been suggested that this small oil on paper is close to the art of François Bonvin (1817-1887) and Théodule Ribot...

Ieva Iltnere (b. 1957)
entered the Latvian art scene in the early 1980s. Together with other young painters of her generation she attracted much attention and radically changed prevailing conceptions about the Latvian figural painting. The fame of this generation of artists has not diminished since that time.
In 1988 Ieva Iltnere took part in the young artists’ exhibition “Post-Traditionalism” at the Central Artists’ House in Moscow as well as in the exhibition “Riga – Lettische Avantgarde” at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Berlin. It was the first important show of Latvian avant-garde art in Western Europe.
In 1990 Ieva Iltnere and her like-minded contemporaries participated in the famous exhibition-action “Gentle Fluctuations” at the Exhibition Hall Latvija in Riga. This exhibition encouraged radical aspirations of the young painters’ group and promoted the adoption of new influences in Latvian art.
In 1992 there was Ieva Iltnere and Jānis Mitrēvics’ joint exhibition “Works” and in 1994 – her solo exhibition “School” at the Art Museum Arsenāls. She took part in important Latvian art exhibitions at the Zvolle City Museum (2002), Frauen Museum in Bonn (1992), Grand Salle de l’Aubette in Strasbourg, Maison du Danemark in Paris (1997), Städtische Galerie im Buntentor in Bremen, etc.
Ieva Iltnere is one of the most outstanding and creative artists of her generation. Her art is able to communicate great, significant ideas, important to both the individual and the society in general, through intimate subject matter. Iltnere has created a particular imagery that clearly marks her individual style.
Her early works deal with themes of family, mother and child, depiction of intimate aspects of life. The artist raised everyday phenomena to the level of sacredness. Today the artist synthesizes traditional means of painting and conceptual approach, inspired by different cultures, Western avant-garde art of the 20th century and Biblical themes (solo exhibition “Stories”, 2002).
Iltnere’s paintings feature subdued colouring and discrete intonation. The artist pays particular attention to light and composition. Each work is endowed with a personal touch.
Iltnere’s works are found in collections of the Latvian National Museum of Art (previous title - State Museum of Art), the Artists’ Union of Latvia Museum (Riga), the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), Ludwig Museum (Aachen, Germany), Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum (New Jersey, USA) as well as in private collections in Latvia and abroad.
