About the Item
This contemporary surrealistic painting by Toni Hamel is a social comment on the environment.
Toni Hamel’s beautifully detailed imagery is rooted in storytelling. The Canadian artist often employs humour or satire to visualize important world events and our own ‘hubris’ in dealing with them. In this piece, a young woman standing on the earth and dressed in ‘vintage’ clothing holds a hose and ‘gasses up’ a cloud that hangs from a wire in front of her. It’s an amusing, surreal image that underscores deep concerns about our mistreatment of the environment. The colours—soft blues and white pop against the deep black of the night sky.
“Fossil fuel will eventually run out. With the advent of EVs and Elon Musk's push to occupy Mars, I wonder if clouds will become a future mode of transportation. Humanity's hubris has no limits, and unfortunately, we are all already suffering the consequences.” Toni Hamel
Toni Hamel was born in Italy in 1961. In the early 1980s, she acquired a BFA from the Accademia di Belle Arti of Lecce in Italy. Upon arriving in Canada, she furthered her studies and attained a post-graduate Certificate in Computer Graphics from Sheridan College (Canada, 1991).
The recipient of several awards, among others, she received the Golden Key National Honour Society Award from the University of Toronto (Specialist Programme in Psychology, 1997) and the Lubiam Prize (Milan, 1983).
Her work has been exhibited in public and commercial galleries in Canada, the USA, and Europe. It is included in the public collections of Mr. J.J. Abrams, Ms. Whoopi Goldberg, Ms. Julia Roberts, the Archives of Ontario/Government of Ontario, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, the Omer DeSerres Corporation, as well as many private international collections. Toni Hamel lives and works in Kingston, Ontario.

"I describe my work as an illustrated commentary on human frailties or, more precisely, as a compendium of unintended consequences. Rooted in storytelling, my art practice draws from personal experiences and outward observations to create thematic bodies of work that reflect on and interpret the psychological unease of our anthropocentric age. Pointing to historical references, popular culture and personal environmental concerns, my satirical narratives ultimately question our behaviour while alerting us about the repercussions of our actions." Toni Hamel Born in Italy in 1961, Toni Hamel acquired a BFA at the Accademia di Belle Arti of Lecce in Italy (1983). In her early twenties, she moved to Canada and furthered her studies, attaining a post-graduate Certificate in Computer Graphics from Sheridan College (Canada, 1991). Hamel is the recipient of three Ontario Arts Council grants (2011, 2012, 2013), the Golden Key National Honour Society Award from the University of Toronto (Specialist Programme in Psychology, 1997), the Lubiam Prize (Milan, 1983) and many other awards. Her work is regularly featured in Canadian and international Arts & Culture magazines, and it has been extensively exhibited in public and commercial galleries and art fairs in Canada, the USA, Europe, Asia and Australia. Mark Bowers- Artist Statement
With the depiction of landscape playing such a central role in the history of North American art, it seemed to offer many of the critical possibilities I was looking for, and it felt more and more like something I have always known. Something I could easily apply, stage, and manipulate as a diary.
My work consists of small-scale highly detailed landscape paintings. They are inspired by the comfort, trepidation, and beauty found in the mundane Chicago Suburbs. I combine nature, decorative house wares...
