George Oswalt
'Virtual Reality 2, ' by George Oswalt, Oil on Canvas Painting

2017

About the Item

This large scale 80" x 72" oil painting by George Oswalt features a summertime theme of women and girls at the beach with a beachball and seagull in the foreground. The two young girls are dressed identically in blue one piece swimsuits and one holds a plastic blow-up toy while the other holds the hand of a fully dressed young woman. The taller woman stands sideways in the foreground gazing at the viewer in a state of undress only wearing high heels. The painting is a study of the progression of time between youth and womanhood. George Oswalt had his first one-man show in 1974 and since has shown in national and regional exhibitions including group and one-person shows. He received his MFA in 1993 from the University of Oklahoma. He has taught art in both high school and college over a 30-year period. Oswalt wrote an art review for the Oklahoma Gazette for two years and is currently painting full time. He is included in both private and public collections including the Fred Jones Art Museum in Norman, the Goddard in Ardmore the Mabee-Gerrer Museum in Shawnee and the Oklahoma State Museum of Art in Stillwater, Oklahoma. "My paintings of figures and objects in vivid color are meditations on living in a hybrid world which has manifested into visual poems of beauty, yearning, time and space. I have spent years working in several series of paintings that deal with weightlessness, loss and life transitions. The imagery is intended to take the viewer on a journey of human yearning which is not merely marked by striving towards something but also by escaping from something." -- George Oswalt

  • 'Can Hats Favor Fire? Can a Hat Aspire to Higher Things?, ' by Mark Gilmore
    By Mark Gilmore
    Located in Oklahoma City, OK
The full frontal female figure is suspended in mid-air with both arms in motion, seemingly about to jump off the canvas. The blurred figure is set against a clear, graphic backdrop of reds, black and other dark tones with a turquoise rectangular box framing the torso of the figure. A simple black wooden frame frames the work. "I have been active in telling stories with images for over 45 years. My fascination with shapes and textures are my earliest memories and everything I have done in my adult life has revolved around these interests. I learned a lot about color, composition and story telling by stripping all sentimentality from these elements and using them for more than 25 years as a designer. Although I enjoy the challenge and variety of commissions, my own work is very personal. My work has always been about expressing the otherness and mystery just underneath everyday life. Reacting to the ephemeral nature of life and mortality. All of my personal paintings are just different ways of expressing one moment, one feeling. I’m describing a place I’ve never been with a language I’ve never spoken but I’ve spent my whole life trying to get there because its my home." -- Mark Gilmore...

  • Hello Hen ! Large Surrealist Contemporary Oil on Canvas.
    By Frank Docherty
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Large surrealist contemporary oil on canvas by Scottish artist Frank McLean Docherty R.S.W. This piece whilst wonderfully colourful, playful and erotic is typical of the witty sense of humour this artist displays in all his work. The title 'Hello Hen !' ( Hen being the scottish slang for 'girl' ) is used playfully as a double-entendre. In the image we see the artist has before him a beautiful naked woman and yet chooses to paint the real hen. Also we notice that the plant's flower heads under the woman are wilting and the artist pictured (a self portrait of Docherty), an older man, suggest that the artist's desires are on the wane. Docherty likes to tease us visually and asks questions and presents conundrums to the viewer. Frank McLean Docherty was born in Glasgow , Scotland in 1942. He became a student at Glasgow School of Art in 1960 and graduated from the Department of Printed Textiles in 1964. He taught in a secondary school in the East End of Glasgow for two years, thereafter departing to work in Dublin in the Republic of Ireland as a textile designer (Marks & Spencer, Heals and Liberty of London). He was also an illustrator for a range of newspapers and an Art Director of magazines. In 1973, he was appointed Principal Teacher of Art in a Scottish High School and in 1978 was honoured by the Queen when he was appointed Member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (R.S.W.) He left education in 1994. Since that time he has developed a vision which is quite unique in Scottish Art. Bank Managers, toucans, lighthouses, penguins, bowler hats, Frank Docherty...
