2014

About the Item

This 32" x 28" oil on canvas painting, 'Midcentury Science of Material Traces,' by artist George Oswalt features a redheaded nude woman standing near a black toy figurine with the face of a Raggedy-Ann doll floating in the sky above her. In the distance, a mid-century style home sits on a hill near two trees. George Oswalt had his first one-man show in 1974 and since has shown in national and regional exhibitions including group and one-person shows. He received his MFA in 1993 from the University of Oklahoma and has taught art in both high school and college over a 30 year period. Oswalt authored an art review column for the Oklahoma Gazette and is currently painting full time. He is included in both private and public collections including the Fred Jones Art Museum in Norman,Oklahoma; the Goddard in Ardmore, Oklahoma; the Mabee-Gerrer Museum in Shawnee, Oklahoma and the Oklahoma State Museum of Art in Stillwater, Oklahoma. "My paintings of figures and objects in vivid color are meditations on living in a hybrid world which has manifested into visual poems of beauty, yearning, time and space. I have spent years working in several series of paintings that deal with weightlessness, loss and life transitions. The imagery is intended to take the viewer on a journey of human yearning which is not merely marked by striving towards something but also by escaping from something." -- George Oswalt

  • 'Can Hats Favor Fire? Can a Hat Aspire to Higher Things?, ' by Mark Gilmore
    By Mark Gilmore

The full frontal female figure is suspended in mid-air with both arms in motion, seemingly about to jump off the canvas. The blurred figure is set against a clear, graphic backdrop of reds, black and other dark tones with a turquoise rectangular box framing the torso of the figure. A simple black wooden frame frames the work. "I have been active in telling stories with images for over 45 years. My fascination with shapes and textures are my earliest memories and everything I have done in my adult life has revolved around these interests. I learned a lot about color, composition and story telling by stripping all sentimentality from these elements and using them for more than 25 years as a designer. Although I enjoy the challenge and variety of commissions, my own work is very personal. My work has always been about expressing the otherness and mystery just underneath everyday life. Reacting to the ephemeral nature of life and mortality. All of my personal paintings are just different ways of expressing one moment, one feeling. I’m describing a place I’ve never been with a language I’ve never spoken but I’ve spent my whole life trying to get there because its my home." -- Mark Gilmore...

  • Nude in French Interior - original extra large oil painting by Paula Craioveanu
    By Paula Craioveanu
    Located in Forest Hills, NY
"Nude in French interior", in a room lighted from one side. Part of my Nude in interior series. Inspired in contrast and colors by French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Nude placed in a French palace, a sober classical interior in contrast with the modern relaxed attitude of the main character. Size is 150x150cm / 59x59in, oil on canvas. Painting was part of my solo show "Nude in Interior", March 2022. Can be shipped rolled in a tube for faster and less expensive shipping. Please inquire. "I started by painting interiors, being interested in space and perspective through my studies. These scenes evolved, when I added the human figure. I focused more on the human figure and its relation to the background. The human figure is more present than ever in my paintings now. As a woman artist I’ve been preoccupied with the female form and its imagery. One of my goals was to capture the solitary moments and the nude’s relation to the surrounding space. My interest turned from depicting the space to rendering the atmosphere and the scene as a whole, the feeling a woman adds to the environment: warmth, desire, joy, a feeling of power and control, or the opposite – sadness, despair. Here is a collection of figurative paintings, exploring the nudes in interior spaces, seeing the nudes from my perspective, as a woman artist, considering the physical and spiritual realities of a woman’s body, in a new level of intimacy. My paintings are the opposite of objectifying a woman’s or a man’s anatomy. Painted works, featuring female nudes and a also men nudes...
