Il dipinto è uno studio piuttosto elaborato e finito della figura del decemviro Appio Claudio, e del suo entourage con i littori, che primeggia nella parte sinistra della monumentale tela con la Morte di Virginia dipinta da Vincenzo Camuccini tra 1799 e 1804, oggi conservata a Capodimonte a Napoli (a). Rispetto al dipinto di Napoli e al bellissimo d’apres autografo conservato al Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi a Lucca (in tutto identico al dipinto di Capodimonte) questa piccola tela presenta poche ma significative varianti compositive. Hanno una diversa composizione e un andamento totalmente differente le figurine appena delineate con olio magrissimo in bianco e cilestrino sullo sfondo a destra. Anche i fasci tenuti dai littori di Appio Claudio risultano leggermente variati nel numero e nella foggia rispetto al dipinto di Napoli. La figura alle spalle a sinistra di Claudio in secondo piano, ad esempio, ne tiene soltanto uno tra le mani, mentre nel dipinto finito saranno due. Altre piccole disuguaglianze si possono cogliere anche nei volti e negli stati d’animo del drappello di figure alle spalle a destra di Appio Claudio. Ma la variante più significativa è quella che riguarda la resa della testa che cade esattamente all’altezza della mano sinistra di Appio Claudio. La figura è rivolta con la testa velata e con lo sguardo impietrito verso la scena agghiacciante, ambientata da Camuccini nel foro di Nerva, che si sta consumando al centro del dipinto in cui il centurione Virginio uccide la figlia Virginia per sottrarla alle brame del malvagio Appio Claudio e al disonore della violenza secondo quanto raccontato da Tito Livio in Ab urbe condita (III, 44-48), poi dettagliatamente ripreso in tempi moderni da Charles Rollin nell’Histoire Romaine depuis la fondation de Rome jusqu'à la bataille d'Actium (1738-1741) e oggetto della tragedia Virginia di Vittorio Alfieri (1783-1786). Nella redazione definitiva del dipinto, invece, questo stesso personaggio avrà il volto rivolto verso la testa di Appio Claudio con un’aria pacata e rasserenata, quasi rapito dalla carismatica figura dell’empio decemviro.
